I have a sony region 2 dvd player with 5.1 surround.
But was wondering if theres so code i could use to make it play region 1 discs, and would it be worth it.Apart from seeing the movie sooner than r2 dvRAB is there any other benefits.

In the early days of DVD, Region 1 discs used to be far superior to Region 2 in terms of extra features, but R2 seems to have caught up now and extra features on new DVRAB are not so different (for older DVRAB, R1 is still superior - Mallrats and Ghostbusters 2 being good examples). I buy many Region 1 discs just because I'm impatient and hate waiting for a R2 if I know the movie is available in the USA :) Also, they sometimes have special editions (such as the Panic Room triple DVD set) which either take ages to come out here, or never come out. The main advantage of R1 in my opinion however is that some older films have never come out on R2 and you can only get them from the USA. For example, I can't believe that Clerks still hasn't had a UK DVD release so I have the superb R1 edition. If you're a DVD collector I think it's impossible not to want R1 discs. Indeed, half of my collection is imported :)

As for a remote control code, you can usually find them by doing a Google search. But use the code at your own risk. I know a couple of people who messed up their players by using region codes or codes to enable VCD playback.

Sony Players are, as a rule, not hanRABet hackable :(

In fact, the only way it'll play region 1 DVRAB is if you pay to have it 'chipped'. Take in mind that the cost of this is often as much as buying a cheap bargin bin DVD player that can be hacked.

The only Sony product I'm aware of being hackable 'out the box' is the PlayStation 2 but you'll need a special disk to do so.

Personally, I feel it probably is worth it if you are a serious DVD/Film collector - otherwise, it probably isn't.

The question about making your Sony regionfree is answered.

Now, is it worth it?
Well, it sure is. Remember that if you are able to play DVD's from all regions, not only Region 1 opens up, but the just as interesting Region 3 and Region 4 too.
I don't generally care for Special Features as you mostly watch it only once, but what I do care for is the BBFC cutting (up) movies. I would like to decide for myself if something is unsuitable for me to watch.
So, I generally go for non-UK and then I'm able to choose the best price worldwide (as a side note: European R2 are mostly uncut).

A very good guide to BBFC Mutilations can be found on http://www.melonfarmers.co.uk/

I bought my multi-region Sony DVD player from http://empiredirect.co.uk/ They are normal region 2 DVD players that have had a 'remote hack' used on them. They retail at the normal price.

With some Sony DVD players you can input a huge series of numbers into the player or more commonly you can buy a 'chipped remote'. You point it at the DVD player, press a button, reset the player and viol-la. Check them out here http://www.dvdchips.co.uk/

More info about the remote here http://www.shoyle.f9.co.uk/dvdchipsuk/sonyremote.htm

Like I said I bought mine from Empire Direct with this process already done. You just place a region 1 DVD into the player and it plays instantly just as a region 2 DVD would. Also with the vast majority of DVD players the RCE protection on region 1 DVD's doesn't affect the player.

Get on E-bay - I bought a portable (great small size) DVD player which I use the remote control to change the regions from 1-4 (before putting dvd in press 'menu 1 9' and a whole list comes up, one option being to change regions and you input region number you require). The picture is always perfect. It is a US model so in the UK all I needed was an RF plug and an adaptor so I could plug the US socket into an English socket and it is fantastic!! I've had it for over 6 months and have never had a problem watching any region. And the best thing - it only cost me $28 (approx. 50 quid). Make & model are as follows:

CyberHome CH-DVD 300
Dolby Digital
MP3
Progressive Scan

Good luck in purchasing one - it will be one of your 'Years Best Buys'. If you need any helping finding one I am in the USA now and would be happy to help.
