Reducing Services

We've been with EV for almost a year and we've decided it's either time to move on or reduce the services we get from them. The problem is we are on a two year contract and I'd like to avoid penalties if at all possible.

Here is our current situation. We rent two receivers (9200 & a very low end SD unit) and subscribe to the HD pack and 5 themes I believe (total monthly cost is about $100, maybe a little less).

Since the 9200 is so buggy (skipping, stuttering, jump to live) and we completely lose signal once or twice a month when it rains we really don't feel we are getting our money's worth. Throw in the fact that the HD stations are much more compressed than when we first subscribed a year ago and I'm getting the feeling I'm being taken advantage of by being an EV HD subscriber.

One of the options we are considering is getting rid of the HD (and associated packs) including the 9200 and switching to an SD PVR. Because we have about a year left on a contract, would we be penalized for this?

If the penalty for reducing service is around the $100 it would cost us to just have EV clear out completely we will be moving to the other satellite provider or back to my original cable provider. They may not be better but we've got nothing to lose.

Any insight would be helpful/appreciated.

i bought a 9242, doesn't glitch/stutter near as much. I'm running a 9200, 9242, 2700 & 1000. 4 tvs. HD and 5 themes is 70. + change per month.
Plus i have an antenna on the OTA tuner for HD programs without the simsubs. I'm fairly satisfied.
Plus I got bigger dishes to prevent the rain fade. I guess it depends on how determined you are to get good TV. :)

I'm renting their equipment and they did the install. If what they installed is not sufficient "to get good tv" as you put it, they don't deserve my dollars.

I think your stuck with a rental but you can reduce services down to their min requirement without a penalty.
Is the two year contract for rental I thought the rental portion was only for a year.

Good point haystack. I'll try to find out.

I'm dreading actually calling them for this discussion, I expect I'll get multiple answers depending who I speak with and then I expect some billing issues.

I think I'll pre-emptively spend my savings on recording equipment to use on the phone call. :)

If you think the HD is more compressed now then where it was when you first signed up a year ago, imagine how I feel compared to when I first signed up in Dec of 04. Last year was bad compared to then. I just wish they would do something about it to make it back to where it was.

To the best of my knowledge, there is no option to downgrade receivers during a 2 year Rental Term.

I am not even sure you can "downgarde" your programming, within this period either...

If you are really determined to leave, I think you are left with nothing but paying the cancellation fees.

Ex Agent can advise better on those.

Unless you are moving to a new house, where a Dish is NOT allowed.......That is a way out for free..... Wink, Wink.....

Guess I'll have to bite the bullet and call.

IMO it's worth paying $100 to get out of my final year. No sense paying $100 a month for quasi HD when I can get SD for about half the price elsewhere. It's really too bad, I like their PVR better than the competitions!

They can come get their stuff and plug up the holes! :)

I hope that was said tongue in cheek because it will not happen.....

Express Vu will ship you empty box's for the receivers, cables and Remotes.

The rest is your problem.

If you request the Dish removing, expect to pay $75 for a Service Call.....

i took a look at Rogers packages last night as i get flyers from them every week begging for me to sign up with them...from what i have found, i can give them my 9200 and my 5900 and they will give me two HDPVR's free for two years...i can also get a comparable video package, faster internet and a comparable home phone plan for about $30-$50 month less than what i am paying now ($50 cheaper for the first year, then about $30 cheaper)...even though $30 isn't a ton cheaper, i would also get things like On Demand and all the London Knights OHL hockey games on the local community channel that Rogers owns.

almost everyone i know has dumped everything from bell and is happy with Rogers, any of you guys in here happy you left?

If I had access to Digital Cable I would dump Express Vu in a heartbeat, unfortunatly, I chose to live in the country, so I am stuck with them, until I can get 5km's of 750P3 Cable and a couple of Trunk Amps pulled onto my street.....lol

If you return the receiver that you rent before the end of the contract there wuld be an early termination fee, even if you keep the rest of the account active

You can reduce your programming with no penalty... Your programming will be reduce on the first day of the next billing cycle followig your call. In te meantime you will receive a bill for that upcomming period that will show the charges of the actual programming package. As soon as the "downgrade" is done these charge will automatically get credited and it would be reflected on the following bill

During the contract term, if you terminate any rental receivers it is $99 fee plus $49 each additional rental receiver.

If you terminate your account programming completely (disconnect service), there's programming penalty of minimum programming (currently $31) times remaining months in your contract up to a maximum of $100.

Removing programming (downgrade) goes as noted above as Ex Agent.
