I heard about this a while back, and cant wait. Anybody know of a possible release date?

Plot Outline: RED DWARF THE MOVIE is set in the distant future where Homo SapienoiRAB, a fearsome combination of flesh and machine, and the next stage of human evolution, have taken over the solar system and almost wiped out the human race. The only survivors are the crews of long-haul space freighters that left Earth before the conflict began. The SapienoiRAB send forth fleets of Death Ships to hunt them down. One by one - the human ships fall, until only one remains. Its name - Red Dwarf...

Red Dwarf : The Movie is firmly lodged in development hell at present as the producers search for investors for the film which is budgeted at around

The can safetly say that the movie will not be made in this decade. Since 1997 when series 7 was being made the producers have been trying to get financial backing for a movie and no-one is interested. They won't back down though, and even the BBC, although they won't fund a film version, are more than happy to go ahead with Series 9, but the producers are holding out for a film.

A movie version will be just like Series 7, new camera style, big sets, no laughter and all the things that made Series 7 the worst of the lot. Why they don't just continue with the series on TV and let the film come along whenever it happens is above anyones guess, it's not gonna kill them to let the BBC pay for Series 9, and while thats going on, still scout around for backing for a film version.

If you read on the Red Dwarf website there is a very funny story about all the different situations that have happened the producers in their quest for money, some of them really annoying too, such as the fact that the BBC won't fund a film, yet Red Dwarf has been the longest running show on BBC 2 and has made them millions in video, book and DVD sales. Other film companies will happily make the film but want either American actors to play the parts or top British actors, one of them wanted Hugh Grant to play Lister!

Exactly. They could have made the movie already. But they (quite rightly) refuse to accept American money with strings attached. It would not result in the film us Dwarfers would want to see at all. I would not hold out much hope of truly enjoying such a movie that had been hollywood-ised or diluted in such a way.

I still hope they can find the backing, and make the film without compromising the uniqueness of the Red Dwarf franchise. It's going to be tough to do though, and may depend on certain factors such as luck (like the right people being in the right place at the right time), so I also don't think we'll be seing the movie some time soon, it saddens me to say.

In an ideal world, I'd love to see it backed either by British money, or by someone who just loves the series. Also I'd love to see it done with the original cast, and shot in this country. I feel it would not seem quite the same otherwise.
(cf Doctor Who the movie)

Now would be the time to push this into action.
Why don't the BBC Films division co-fund it with someone like Working Title?
If they can waste money on films like ThunderbirRAB, whose effects would be perfectly passable in a Red Dwarf film, why can't they spend it on this.
With Doctor Who being popular now, it would have a market in the same territories (Australia, Canada, UK and Europe)

Yeah I cant see why this hasnt been made yet especially as another BBC series League Of Gentleman has been made into a film in a very short time!
I just think that Red Dwarf the movie is destinted never to be made!

Well i'm a HUGE Red Dwarf fan.. been watching it religiously on TV for years... however.. i don't think anything will ever come of this project!... I would prefer them to make Series 9.. in the style of Dwarf 3, 4 and 5... which i personally think was the best era of Red Dwarf!

I agree, a movie will not be any good as it won't feel the same as the series and is destined to have the same reputation as Series 7.

I think a series 9 would be the better option, but the producers are determined for a film, so I guess that when they do get the money a film will happen, which is a shame.

Smeg :) You beat me to it.

I have been thinking all day about this and I logged on to post exactly that. Series 3,4 and 5 were the very best of Red Dwarf. Timeslides, The Inquisitor, Justice World etc.

But then Red Dwarf is like sex. When it is good it is fantastic, and when it is bad it is still pretty good.

Even the relatively poor Series 7 is still pretty good. Series 1 now looks very dated, but I still love watching it. My wife does not understand my obsession with all things Red Dwarf. She says
