I went for a walk with my husband last night, wanted to see how long I could walk for before I HAD to stop (risky 'test' in a way, but I was determined to try). I haven't walked long distances during recovery and wasn't walking but a pittance before surgery b/c of the pain. I could tell this weekend that I was ready for some serious distance (or time), could tell I was feeling a lot better, and wanted to test it out. I managed almost an hour before my ankle gave out on me. I guess my ankles aren't as strong b/c of less use, too. We had to stop, then slow down considerably for the rest of the way home b/c of my ankle. If not for the ankle, I probably would have made it home without hitting really bad back pain at all, but b/c we had to slow down so ridiculously and were out so much longer, I did hit the high scale of pain before getting home (and we had to stop for a rest b/c of that, then I continued on home just dealing w/ it and moved back down the scale to mild-moderate once home). During the walk (the first hour), I had only the mild to moderate pain, which is something I'm rather use to, of course, and would go a little slower or take a moment's pause when I needed to, a nice walk out with my husband (and time together to just talk), so the majority was pretty good. Before my surgery, I couldn't walk 10 minutes (slowly) without excruciating pain (if I lasted that long) and now I can walk more than hour before it gets bad.. not excruciating, just bad enough to make me stop. I don't even care that it's mild to moderate because I'm so happy that I can REALLY walk now. My ankle seems fine now; I didn't seem to actually injure it, just felt as if I had last night --so I'm definitely going out again tonight for another long, langoring walk with my husband, but planning the length this time, 45 minutes. Before testing things out, I hadn't walked at a normal pace longer than 20 minutes for any one walking 'session', not more than 30 minutes at my 'recovery pace' (which was super slow). When my ankles and the rest of my legs are fully strong again, I'm going our for an hour and a half!
And, I can finally have 'real' sex again now, too. TMI for some maybe, but I'm dang happy about it and figured anyone heading into the same surgery or recently out might want to know. We waited until almost 6 weeks post-op from my lurabar surgery to try, but that one time 3 weeks ago was sort of 'basic' (and brief) -and I was hurting afterward (but happy). We didn't try again until now and... what a difference 3 weeks makes! It's still not "like before", but it was worth a third place ribbon, honorable mention, or something.., was better than basic & brief and I wasn't in much pain afterward.
Now, if only I can improve the pain and nurabness with sitting for even short perioRAB and the trickiness of not bending to do things that require bending. Then, things will be moving forward really, really well. I'm quite happy with progress made in 9 weeks and eager to see where I am in 3, 6, and another 9 more (and past that, too).
This wasn't a question post, but I wanted to share (even about the sex). I know that everyone here understanRAB and relates, so this was the group of people I wanted to share with.

Hi...So glad to hear you are doing better....And I am really glad you posted about sex....we tried at 3 weeks and it was kinda basic...like you said...I was going to ask my dr. about that when i go next week, at my 6 week post op...I am waiting to hear from a company that uses a stimulator....I guess there are behind, its not the tens unit, I have that...just wanted to drop in and say....So glad to read your happy post.
I hope you have a great day! Pen

Thank you, Mary! I've toned down the walking and am not as 'normal' with it as I was when starting out that night, but I'm still doing long-ish walks. It wasn't so wise to push it that one night out, but I'm still doing so much better than I was before and I'm happy.
And, countrymama, the sex is still going, too (and I'm definitely happy with that as well). Trust me that 3 weeks makes a significant difference --although, I'm not sure how things will go for you at 6 weeks (compared to 9). I wish you luck with any attempts made at both 6 weeks and 9 weeks, though. OH, and I have to tell you that I LOL'd when I read that you were looking into getting a stimulator... right after having said you were going to ask your doctor about the sex. I realize what kind of stimulator you meant (for your back), but for a second there, I hesitated --lol. Can I ask though, how much your tens unit cost and where you purchased it from? My husband has brought up buying one for our son as well as for me (our son has PT for his feet and legs and has corabos with electical stim and ultrasound every week in PT --I get it on my back, of course). My husband said he thought we could get one for $300, but I thought that was a low figure for such equipment. Am I wrong (I hope)? And, do you like having a tens unit at home--does it help and is it easy to use yourself?
Thanks!
Meghan

LOl...LOL..LOL..that was to funny, good to be able to laugh again...Still chuckling here...I got my tens at the chiropracter..and my insurance covered it...I have had to buy some of the patches or what ever there called that goes with it..I found them online...I also seen the tens unit on line and there were some less than 300..and there are some more than that...so you can get it fairly cheap.. that was at **REMOVED**...And yes I loved having it at home..I used it alot, and they are easy to put on,,,its like a small beeper, then hook up the wires on it and then clip it to where the patchs are....it was great...for some reason my Dr. dont want me using that...Dont know...Well. I havent been able to walk to much due to rain...I did make it out for a short one today...and ohhhhhh my legs...I could only take a few steps, then rest a min. then a few steps...But Hey, this to will get better..Atleast there is no more scicata pain....Aghhhhhhh...that was the worst ever...But I'm all around starting to feel better...Mentally, Emontionally....That pain can take so much from you...I couldnt stand to be around anyone, couldnt stand myself actually....Thank God that is over...Hope this helped about the tens...Take Care..MaMa
