My 12 year old son recently started having occasional acne breakouts. He had one painful, hard, under the skin, lump-type, cystic pimple above his lip for the past 3 days. I bought him some over the counter remedy (10% benzoyl peroxide) but that did not help.

I suffered with acne from a teen well into my 30s at which point I took Accutane. My skin is now clear with no breakouts. I hope he has not inherited my skin problems. I plan to take him in to see a dermatologist as soon as I can get an appointment.

In the meantime, does anyone have any recommendations of any over the counter or at home remedy that would help? It's been years since I bought acne medication and I do not know what is out there now that works. Thank you.

These are just some things I've found to be effective in treating and preventing acne:

aspirin mask: have your son mix a drop or two of honey with about 7 baby aspirin (without the coating, they're like $1 a bottle at any dollar store) and a drop or two of water in a bowl. Then, have him gently apply it to his face, leaving it on for anywhere from 20-45 minutes. The honey is like an anti-bacterial and the aspirin is another for of salicylic acid to reduce redness

gentle face scrub: I've found face scrubs to be much more effective than just plain face washes. I highly recommend St. Ives Apricot scrub! Just make sure he doesn't scrub his face too hard. Also, when drying his face, make sure he pats and doesn't rub.

Taking fish oil and flax seed oil are also supposed to be very good for the skin. I've never taken either, but my brother swears by them!

Good luck to you and your son!

Hey I use Murad Clarifying Cleanser. It works prettty gooood! You should search online for a bargain on the Clarifying Cleanser because it can be expensive. I bought mines from Murad website the 6.75 oz for about $27. I used it when I was 16 but I had mild acne in middle school to. I'm pretty sure his skin will improve. Good luck!!!!

I have heard that proactiv works well. I know my mom ordered it and used it for awhile. I think they have a money back guarantee too, but I'm not positive on that. Its just another option to think about.

I have a 13 yr old daughter. What works best for her is the Neutrogena 8hr spot treatment cream. Even though its for spot treatments, she applies a thin layer on her breakout and it is very effective. She also uses the proactive toner first, lets it dry, then applies the Neutrogena cream. The toner keeps her face from over drying.
