I'm a huge fan of Greg Egan, read all of Baxter's Xeelee sequence, have a couple of Vinge books in my pile of books to read, and am currently reading "Accelerando" by Charles Stross.

Anything else I must read? It's got to be rock hard. Don't mention Iain M Banks - I love his stuff, but it's more space opera than hard sf.

Stranger in a Strange Land, Robert Heinlein. A classic and one of my favorite Sci Fi books. Anything else by him is good too.

Thank my bf for this
he recommends -- Robert Heinlein, John Steakley, William Gibson, Isaac Asimov, Philip K. Dick -- he said go to the library,or amazon and just type in those names. -- Heinlein is was his highest recommendation though.

Sorry...this is not going to be useful to you, but it is so nice to see someone else who likes Greg Egan. I was hooked after I read Diaspora. :) He's one of the few hard SF writers whose writing doesn't make me cringe.

Edit: Actually I second the rec for Reynolds.
