It doesn't need to be a SmartPhone... the biggest concern, obviously, is price. I don't really want to spend more than $300 on a phone -- and I've already got a contract.
I want to use it for e-mail, calendar,web, and a phone. If it has a camera, great. otherwise, I don't really care. I'm using a crappy LG C1300 right now, so it's time for a new phone.
