Recommend me some rare movies

A recent noirish crime film that didn't seem to get the attention it deserved: The Lookout with Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Jeff Daniels

A dark crime film from Spain: Noche de las Girasoles (Night Of The Sunflowers)

The French adaptation of Harlan Coben's Tell No One with Francois Cluzet playing a Hitchcockian hero on the run

re: some of the other suggestions. Wasn't it great when BBC Two used to show classic films from the likes of Truffaut, Godard and Bunuel? In fact, when did a Bunuel film last get a TV airing?

Gilda is in the cheap bins at our local Morrisons - have a look out for it at your nearest branch, it's a fantastic film. I also got Orson Wells' Lady from Shanghai - a forgotten masterpiece.

Touch of Evil was cheap in HMV recently - one of Orson Wells' best.

Battleship Potempkin was given away free with today's Guardian.

Nosferatu is free on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MEOsb6CRvNU

If you like(d) Nosferatu then you'll probably like Carl Dreyer's 1932 film Vampyr, which is also free on youTube at

Louis Bunuel & Salvador Dali's 1926 film Un Chien Andalou is available free at

Twelve Monkeys was based on La Jet

Failsafe is a good one. I think it was made for TV, with big name actors like Richard Dreyfus and George Clooney, but it was done live in front of the cameras, like a stage play, unedited like they used to do live TV in the old days. An excellent story - like a serious version of Dr Strangelove.

the Sicilian Clan has recently been released on DVD, Alain Delon and the wonderful Lino Ventura.

Most Ventura films are worth a look if you can find them with subtitles. La Bonne Annee (happy new year) is one of my all time faves, plus Army of darkness, about the French resistance.

Had a quick scan and couldn't see any of these mentioned.

Strange Days (1995) - Cult sci-fi thriller about the latest virtual reality technology which recorRAB videos directly from the brain to allow users to fully experience the action. A dealer, in such movies, stumbles accross a snuff film & conducts his own investigation. A little cliched at times but highly enjoyable.
The Devil's Rain (1975) - One of those so bad it's good films about a satanic cult. Look out for John Travolta in a non speaking role (with no eyes :p)

36 - (2004) - Brilliant police/consipiracy thriller with Gerard Depardieu on fine form.

Above Suspicion (A good, gripping 1995 suspense movie starring Christopher Reeve).

The Night Stalker (The pilot TV movie to the Kolchak TV series is a very good comedy horror film)

Inside (or A L'Interieur) (2007 French movie-One of the best horror thrillers of the last decade, superb movie never released in UK or US)

O cangancero (The Bandit), a Brazilian film from the 1950s
was very popular when released here, a violent film about a kidnapping. The theme song was in the top 20 at the time.
Difficult to find today, I have not seen it for many years.
Another big hit from that era was Bitter Rice, (Italy) that one set Silvano Mangano on the way to stardom. The famous shot of her in the rice fielRAB was seen everywhere.
These 2 are well worth seeing if you get the opportunity.

Almost a James Cameron film - written by him, and wasn't it directed by his wife?

Your mention of John Travolta with no eyes made me think of Yeux San Visage (Eyes Without A Face) - an excellent French horror from 1960.

One I remember from the 1980s is Trouble In Mind - a stylish gangster film starring Kris Kristofferson, and Divine in a straight role as a gangland boss. (Good luck getting a copy though - it's currently

Vanishing Point (1971)

This wasnt a massive movie, but its more of a cult classic.
Its the best Road/chase movie I've seen, and has a great funk/soul soundtrack to compliment it.
Big open desert roaRAB, great 70s feeling, just a great forgotten classic road movie :)

Gattaca - My Favourite film of all time. It's pretty underrated and not too many people seem to have seen it which is a shame.

Take Care of My Cat - One of my top ten films of all time, so beautifully done.

Last Night - Stunning low budget Canadian film about the last few hours of Earth

Lawn Dogs - Mischa Barton's acting career peaked really early in this incredibly sweet film.

The Man From Earth - Really simple sci-fi film done incredibly well.

Pieces Of April - Touching film about family reconciliation during the holidays

Dream with the Fishes Odd film about Life & Death but fantastic

Cypher is just fantastic couldn't agree more with that.

Primer is a good film but only once you get it and I had to read a description of what I'd seen on imdb just so I could understand it. It was far too difficult for me to get on my own.
