Recommend me some rare movies

This explanation of it that I found on the internet made me laugh. It should be prefaced with "look, it's perfectly straight forward..."

By rare, I mean films that might not have been seen or even heard of by the majority. I like most genres; historical, drama, horror, thriller, romance, comedy...just about anything. Old films are fine; as long as the film is quality I'm not bothered about how old it is or if it's black and white, etc. In fact, I love old films so I welcome recommendations of that nature in particular.

I'm on the lookout to broaden my horizons when it comes to films and so I'm turning to others. Please recommend me some "rare" movies you've liked. Maybe I'll like them too, as might others who read this thread.
 
Freeze Frame is a good one - a guy who's so paranoid about being wrongfully arrested that he films himself 24 hours a day and keeps a video archive - but it all goes a bit wrong (of course).

The Delicate Art of Parking - a spoof documentary about traffic wardens in Canada - a really funny film.
 
Here's a gem of a film which I think is pretty rare.

Static (1986) Dir:Mark Romanek Stars:Keith Gordon, Amanda Plummer

A wonderful, surreal and beautiful film about a quiet, out-of-place lad in an American bible-belt town who obsesses over his "invention" - something so wonderful that it will change the world, forever.

If you like intelligent American films like Donnie Darko or American Beauty, which both were certainly influenced by it, see if you can find this film. It won't disappoint.
 
I've seen Freaks! Good rec, though. It's a great film. though very disturbing even when you consider the time it was made. I saw it on TCM a few years ago myself and was impressed.

Have not heard of "Cannibal" though. Will see about taking a look. :)
 
Film called Sole Survivor. made in the early 70's starring William Shatner.

Not on DVD and I've not seen it on Telly for donkeys.

About a plane that crashes in the desert during the war and the crew wait to be rescued not realising that they have actually died and are just ghosts
 
A long forgotten comedy which I think is an absolute classic.......Easy Living starring the greatly underrated Jean Arthur! Wonderful stuff!
 
Went The Day Well, 1942 classic war film of British civilians fighting a German invasion (think a black and white 'The Eagle Has Landed'...)
Blood Red---1967 war film with Cornell Wilde, still quite brutal and Speilberg nicked great chunks of it for Private Ryan
Villain--classic 1971 British gangster film with Richard Burton
Rififi---1956 Jules Dassin classic, one of the greatest films ever made
The Last Man on Earth--1964 orig version of I am Legend with Vincent Price
Robbery---1967, Stanley Baker
The Gift Horse, 1952 British war film about the commando raid on St Nazaire
 
That's a good one! I loved the ending. It's best not to read up on it before you see it because a lot of the power of the film comes from not knowing what it is he's invented until he unveils it. It's available on Amazon but the review says it's a really bad transfer to DVD - "It looks like it was mastered from an old VHS tape".
 
Not sure if this could strictly be classed as a "rare" film, but a film I love which a lot of people haven't heard of is "The Power of One." It's set in South Africa around the 1940's-1950's and is about Apartheid and race hate.

Daniel Craig and Morgan Freeman play minor roles in it. Think it was made in early 1990's.
 
Does that have some kind of boxing scenes in it?:confused: I remember a film many years ago now which was set in South Africa and it sounRAB like it may be the one I'm thinking of.

Das Kabinett des Dr. Caligari(very good imo)

The birth of a nation (quite scary too see really...but it is a must see for silent movies... ohh and you suddenly understand where Coppola got the idea to one of his famous scenes (Ride of the Valkyries scene) in 'apocalypse now':rolleyes:)

Potemkin (Also a classic. Brian de Palma payed a homage to it in his 'the untouchables' - the famous stair scene....)

^^^Some good movies there. I like Rear Window and Gilda.

Also not sure if its rare, but I love Harold and Maude and not many people seem to have heard of it, and also Imagine Me & You.
 
I completely agree - I was lucky enough to catch the film not knowing anything about it, which is definitely the way to experience it. The ending is fabulous too, isn't it...
