Recommend me some movies please!

I'm not the biggest movie fan in the world, but I know I there are still lots of great movies being made which I've not watched. I've got a 3 month voucher for Lovefilm so I'd like some recommendations :).

I'm not really interested in big budget, special effects laden blockbusters, but I'm open to anything else. Any genre, small independent films, foreign films, anything really as long as it's good. Also, I'm interested in discovering recent movies, say from the last 5 years, rather than old ones.

Sorry if this has been done to death on this forum, just point me to those threaRAB if that's the case, thanks :).

Ok my recommendations are... (in no particular order)

V for Vendetta
28 Days Later
The Usual Suspects
Bedazzled (original with Cook & Moore)
Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon
Schindlers List
Shawshank Redemption

Just a few i think are good and a varied selection too :)

Thanks for the recommendations so far. A few there I haven't watched yet :).

Perhaps I should have explained what I was looking for a bit clearer. Rather than well known 'classics', I'm after the lesser known films of the last few years that, although not necessarily box office hits, are still really good films :).

I know I'm being quite specific but I'm a fussy git, sorry :p.

If you like psychological scary ones AJ, then I can recommend The Mothman Prophecies - pretty much sticks to actual wierd events that happened in 1967 in Point Pleasant, West Virginia.
Also, Mulholland Drive by David Lynch.
Got to go to a friend's house for a birthday curry now - I'll post some more later. :)

Saw 'The Mothman Prophecies' & I liked it.
Love that type of creepy thriller, hate blood & gore though.

Not seen 'Point Pleasant' or 'Mulholland Drive' .
Something to look forward to.

The Descent, Excess Baggage, Grosse Point Blank and Dear Frankie (if you are a girl!). And if you dontmind subtitltes La Reine Margot.

Thanks, keep 'em coming, I'm making a list of these :). I don't mind subtitles, or weird films, or gory stuff.....just anything you think is good and not boring or predictable .

Point Pleasant isn't a film, AJ; it's the place where the Mothman stuff happened back in 1967.

'Cypher' was really good - creepy conspiracy type stuff, no blood or gore.
'Memento', if you like stuff that you have to work out - the story's told backwarRAB in 5 minute segments. (But if you really want to do your head in, 'Primer' is the one!)
'The Eye' by Danny and Oxide Pang (great name!) was a great non-gory ghost film. Haven't see the 2 sequels though, but I'm told they're good.
Another one that I really liked was 'Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow' - an independent film more or less made by one guy, but a big studio stepped in and helped get it made a bit quicker than the original 2 year estimate. It's a wonderful tribute to all things modernist - Jules Verne, Rider Hagard, Conan Doyle, all that 1920s-1930s stuff (which I love!)

Thanks!...yes, these sort of movies but I'm not put off by obscure/artsy stuff so those as well if people have any good ones they'd recommend.

Thanks for posting the trailers as well (great idea!). Of those, I've only seen Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and I loved it....and I'll check the others out :).

Ok some of my favs
Drama
Thirteen
City of God
Pieces of April

Drama/Fantasy
The butterfly effect
Pan's Labyrinth
Twelve Monkeys

Comedy
Saved
Little Miss Sunshine
Last Supper

Thanks alot damndirtyape, I really appreciate the time you've spent posting the trailers as well and they're exactly the sort of films I was looking for :).

ps. I don't care what anyone tells me about security, my plan is to stick with XP and IE6 for as long as possible....when it comes to M$ I use the if it ain't broke, don't fix it theory ;).
