I'd recommend North Face, about a famous attempt to climb the north wall of the Eiger in the 1930s.

I agree.Sophie Scholl has only been shown on tv once(C4 i think).I thought i wouldn't like it,but it was a riveting film.

I highly recommend Cherry Blossoms (2008) - it's a collaborative German/Japanese film but the cast is mostly German.
Aya Irizuki is one to watch out for in this film. She's a lovely actress.

Great film but, IMO, marred a little by the OTT climax.
It does mention the war, but only in short personal flashback, so I think they got away with it.

Aimee and Jaguar. Set in World War II, based on a true story. Very well made film.

For comedy you could try: Der bewegte Mann
Or you could try a televisionseries like Berlin Alexanderplatz, which was highly praised, directed by Rainer Werner Fassbinder.
Just bought Buddenbrooks myself, but have not watched it yet.
Same goes for Wolke 9 (Cloud Nine) which received very good reviews.
