Recommend me some German films!

The Baeder Meinhof complex.....gritty and complex but great acting and an intelligent storyline.

Edit : See someone beat me to it....

I agree.Sophie Scholl has only been shown on tv once(C4 i think).I thought i wouldn't like it,but it was a riveting film.

Das Boot, another fine German film.Best war film ever made in my opinion.

Downfall too.On tonight at 9pm More 4.Best thing on the tv this week.Excelllent acting.Bruno Ganz as Hitler is mesmerising..Excellent soundtrack as well..

I highly recommend Cherry Blossoms (2008) - it's a collaborative German/Japanese film but the cast is mostly German.

Aya Irizuki is one to watch out for in this film. She's a lovely actress.

Mephisto (Hungarian/German) with Klaus Maria Brandauer

For comedy you could try: Der bewegte Mann

Or you could try a televisionseries like Berlin Alexanderplatz, which was highly praised, directed by Rainer Werner Fassbinder.

Just bought Buddenbrooks myself, but have not watched it yet.

Same goes for Wolke 9 (Cloud Nine) which received very good reviews.

edit: Did anyone mention Die Blechtrommel? A real classic. Novel written by G

Tin Drum already mentioned but OP saib they are not into Nazi era pieces which is a pity because it is very good and feels like it was made yesterday

Some favourites of mine based on yours, that haven't already been mentioned. I'm in the same, German film loving place. I've even translated subtitles into English using Google...

Starring Jurgen Vogel (The Wave):
Der Freie Wille (The Free Will) - Has him as a rapist trying to rehabilitate. Very stark and brutal.
Das Leben ist eine Baustelle - which rather bizarrely also stars Ricky Tomlinson as a Berlin teddy boy.

Moritz Bleibtreu (Run Lola Run):
Das Experiment

Daniel Bruhl:
Ein Freund Von Mir
No Regrets
The White Sound - has him as a schizophrenic

Others
Kammerflimmern - about an ambulance driver with an irregular heartbeat
Berlin is in Germany - about an East German prisoner releaased after the fall of the wall.
Herr Lehmann
Sonnenallee - an Ostalgie film with the funniest T-Rex sequence ever.
Absolute Giganten
Kebab Connection - a Turkish kid tries to make the first German kung-fu film whilst dealing with his pregnant German girlfriend (the not-too-shabby Nora Tschirner)
Combat 16 - a teenage martial arts expert moves from West German Frankfurt to East German Frankfurt
