Not just any old films please.

I like black comedys, deep and twisty plots. Meaningful and emotive films that spur the imagination and keep you thinking. (that doesn't mean titanic  )

Some of my faves are. 21 Grams, American Beauty, Good Will Hunting etc etc.

Please no Tarentino crap and the like.

Merci Beacoup in advance :)

Most aren't comedies, but are worthwhile.

The Sweet Hereafter
Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind
Lost In Translation
La Haine
Amelie
Happiness
Abre Los Ojos
Requiem For A Dream
Ed Wood
The Big Lebowski (or any older Coen Bros films)

And hey don't diss the popular films, it's ok to enjoy them, it doesn't make you any less intelligent ;)

Try any of the following:

Blood Simple (or any Coen Bros film up to and including
The Big Lebowski)

Heathers (one of the best high school comedies ever made, and recently re-released on DVD)

Happiness (have to agree with the others - this is as dark as hell and it will make you think!)

Rushmore/The Royal Tenenbaums

The Last Supper (this is a GREAT little movie and Cameron Diaz is excellent in it!)

Dead Man's Curve (great black comedy from a few years back which hardly anybody saw, sadly - it still pops up on
late night BBC1 schedules from time to time)

The Usual Suspects (a must-see if you've not seen it already)

how about some coen brothers films after the big lebowski?

o brother where are thou and the man who wasn't there are excellent.

For some reason, I've never been able to get into O Brother....as good as it is. The Man Who Wasn't There is an excellent film, however.

And yes, Being John Malkovich and Adaptation are both fab. Should also toss in a mention for Swimming With Sharks while we're at it - early Kevin Spacey film in which he is superb as a Hollywood movie mogul who is the boss from hell. Again, very dark and very funny.

talking of kevin, smith that is, how about clerks or chasing amy?

going back a bit, but midnight cowboy is one of my all time favourites.

or hannah and her sisters,
annie hall
or
manhattan

or one flew over the cuckoo's nest,
12 angry men,
all the president's men,
apocalypse now,
the three colours trilogy,
until the end of the world
the man who would be king
the big easy
wild things
fight club
vanilla sky
the green mile
the wicker man
brazil
birdy
the vanishing (the original, not the remake)
don't look now
papillon
the mission

What do you mean no Tarantino crap and the like!?

Princess and The Warrior is a fabulous film, a lot have been mentioned that I would have recommended.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is wonderful(getting a dvd release next month, but I recommend the Criterion edition if you have multi).

A Tale of Two Sisters is a twisty mind boggling Korean film that is just brilliant.
