Recommend Me Some Films Please

Just opened up a Lovefilm account and was wondering if anyone had any films they would highly recommend.

My fave films are American Beauty, Shawshank Redemption, The Great Escape, The Green Mile and a a few others.

I also love comedies such as Knocked Up, Superbad, 40 Year Old Virgin etc.

Thanks in advance.

Anchorman for comedy if you haven't seen it, also Tropic Thunder is good fun. There are a lot of average films on the comedy front - but tbh with a lovefilm account you never mind watching a lot of average films as well!

There are too many to mention really - some modern classics that i've recently seen include:
Slumdog Millionaire (not sure if its on DVD yet)
Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Traffic
The Reader

And don't forget some classics that you may have missed like:
It's a Wonderful Life
Godfather (I & II)
Goodfellas
Dr. Strangelove
Pulp Fiction
Lord of the Rings
Schindler's List
L.A Confidential
Saving Private Ryan
Truman Show
Lost in Translation

I know Lovefilm has a good search function - but this website is my personal favourite for searching for lost gems:
http://www.metacritic.com

Also - I watched some great TV series from Lovefilm when I subscribed - so make sure you catch up on:
Teachers
West Wing
House
Lost

and many many more - looks like you will be very busy!

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
Casino Royale
Quantum Of Solace
In Bruges
The Boat That Rocked (not out yet though...few more months i think)

:)

If you're not adverse to subtitles, I would also recommend

Amelie
Pans Labyrinth
Cinema Paradiso
The Lives of Others
City of God
The Sea Inside
Life is Beautiful

and a fabulous film I stumbled across on ITV3 recently
Children of Heaven, which was wonderful!

Milion Dollar Baby and Mystic River too, God so many great films out there!!

Scarface
Love me or Leave Me
Imitation of Life
Ill Cry Tomorrow
From Here to Eternity
Singing in the Rain
Saturday Night and Sunday Morning
On Golden Pond
Midnight Cowboy
Random Harvest.
Rebecca
Vertigo
Strangers on a Train
Some Like it Hot

And for more humour -
Blazing Saddles and The Producers - two of the funniest films you'll ever see.

If we're talking more classic comedy then if you haven't seen any early Steve Martin films - The Man With Two Brains and The Jerk prove that he was a very very funny man. Note the word WAS - see Cheaper by the Dozen to prove my point.

And if you like Gangster films:
Casino
Once Upon a Time in America (brilliant!)
Carlito's Way
Reservoir Dogs

I think you're going to have to give us more info on the type of films you want...
