Recommend a Horror Film!

Hi there,

I was wondering if anybody could recommend any decent horror/sci-fi films. I used to watch lots of movies but university/job workloaRAB stopped me for a couple of years. I'm now trying to play catch-up and make time to watch more films!

I recently watched the original Friday 13th and enjoyed it. I also saw My Bloody Valentine (I know!!) and thought it was good too. I'm also a huge fan of the Terminator/Alien series. Would anybody be able to recommend any other similar films that you think I would like?

Thanks! :)

I'm going to go half way between your favourite genres and recommend 'The Prestige'

Trust me, it's a brilliant film and if you don't like it you've got no taste :)

Well I still watched movies but not as frequently/religiously - mainly would just see the big blockbusters. Seemed to stop around the 2005/6 mark. Although like I said I quite like older films too like Friday 13th.

A few others I have enjoyed - Event Horizon, A Perfect Getaway, Urban Legend, The Departed, 30 Days of Night.

You're in for a treat then. The film PREDATORS is coming out in July 2010.
I've seen the trailer and it looks like your sort of film.:)

Martyrs is just brilliant. I hate gore films, that are sick just for the sake of it, like Saw etc because they can be cheesy. But Martyrs was so horrible and nasty and just kept getting more and more twisted. Loved it.

Horrors I'd recommend.

Fraglie- psychological ghost story with a terrifying 'baddy'
The Changeling- really creepy ghost story
Nightbreed- psychological 'creature' film
Creepshow- horror anthology
The Cell- psychological. don't let that JLo is in it put you off.
In the Mouth of Madness- psychological horror
Evil Dead- crazy gore movie
Don't Look Now- psychological/ ghost
Trick r Treat- a modern, horror anthology with lots of twists
Braindead (NZ)
The Devil's Backbone (Spanish) ghost/ mystery film
The Orphanage (Spanish) ghost/ mystery film
Dumplings-not a typical horror, but extremely unsettling (HK)
Ichi the Killer- very violent and gory (Japan)
Tale of Two Sisters- brilliant ghost/ mystery story (S.Korea)
Audition- twisted thriller/ horror (Japan)
Premonition- ghost/ thriller (Japan)

Dog Soldiers (2002) is pretty good. The same director did The Descent (2005) which is a good film. I haven't seen the sequel The Descent: Part 2. (2009)

One film I have that haven't seen but have been told by a friend is really nasty is a film called Martyrs. (2008) It's a french film with subtitles.

The story is:
A young woman's quest for revenge against the people who kidnapped and tormented her as a child leaRAB her and a friend, who is also a victim of child abuse, on a terrifying journey into a living hell of depravity

Another person on forum said this about it.

In almost every conceivable way this film is sadistic, demented and morally reprehensible and I feel worse off for having watched it. I now feel an innate need to watch some Disney and cleanse my tarnished soul. I must remember to thank my Sister for recommending it to me, I certainly won't be recommending it to anyone!

Recent horrors:

Another nod for Martyrs, and a big nod for [REC], both vastly superior to limp-wristed cack like Drag Me To Hell or the derivative, reactionary drivel of Eden Lake, both of which mystifyingly have their advocates on this forum.

I also enjoyed The Strangers, another film which many seem to hate, but I rather took to its dream/nightmare atmosphere and subtle, clever touches.
