Hey, I am a Spanish/Latin American literature nut. I love it. But I am looking for a book that is set in possible war time (or some third world time as in Gabriel G. Marquez 100 years...) in Spain, Portugal or South America, or has to do with bandits, or gringos, or rebels, or where the protagonist is some warrior-type guy, y'know? Something like Don Quixote but the guy is actually taken seriously. Thanks.

I've just recently started hearing about The Savage Detectives and 2666 by Roberto Bolaño (deceased), who is supposed to be the greatest Latin American author since Marquez. You might also want to try Isabel Allende - House of Spirits being the one I always hear as her best, though if you're a self-proclaimed Spanish-language lit. nut, you've probably already read a lot of her works.

You could also read For Whom the Bell Tolls by Hemingway - fits your criteria to a T except that it's not written by a Spanish speaker (but it takes place in the Spanish civil war). And in film, try Pan's Labyrinth if you haven't already.

Isabel Allende's "The House of Spirits" was interesting and a different read. I recommend it.

Julio Cortazar's "Hopscotch" is even better. You'll like it if you liked "One Hundred Years of Solitude"

I've got two for you:

"For Whom the Bell Tolls" by Ernest Hemingway. A story about an American who fought in the Spanish Revolution.

and

"The Navigational Chart". Don't remember the author. Some Spanish guy. The book was translated from Spanish to English. It is a great treasure hunt story.
