Recently got an iphone help?

I just received a 2g iphone from an employee who got a new one. I have AT&T so I figured this iphone would work since it's AT&T also if I switched my sim card into it but it didn't. I was going to just jailbreak it but it won't show up on itunes. How can I get it to work or show up on itunes?
