89 4.3l, 230k. Can I just use new rings on the same pistons? The engine has been maintained fairly well. Is it really that important to overbore the cylinders? I'm not looking to build a race engine here. Just rejuvenating the engine while I do a transmission swap and a lift.

It is important to get the bores measured first, and is a good idea to get them honed, for the new rings to wear into. You should have the pistons measured as well, to make sure they are still in spec. Best to take the block, and pistons into a machine shop, so they can do all that stuff for you for a small fee. Not sure on the fee though.
