What annoyed me with Shirley is she seemed to be important only because the show wants us to think she was. They did this in season one with the whole Mao arc. This character who Lelouch seems to have been avoiding whenever he can help it suddenly becomes the center of his world. That was a really loppsided look at the questionable morality of Lelouch's crusade;
"Ha ha ha, a lanRABlide! My arabition must be complete, no matter the cost!"
"Wah, my daddy (who the audience never even met) died"
"Sweet lord, I'm a monster!"
The Shirley and Lelouch angle was as bad as the likes of Lana and Clarke in Smallville. It seemed to be running on a different course from the mainplot, like the writers had this glass case "In Case Of Teen Melodrama, Add Shirley". I've heard some argue it shows that Lelouch still has humanity but it's a terrible way to do it. The show neeRAB to decide if Lelouch is commited to changing the world or wants that along with his happy little school life. He can't have both and hopefully this will finally resolve things.
