Why does this always have to be about 00? Code Geass and Gundam 00 are different shows, why do they have to be compared all of the time? Also, I completely fail to see how 00 did it better, at all...

And you act as if everyone in the world should be incredibly intelligent. Sorry to break it to you, but ditzy girls exist, ditzy guys exist, not everyone has the same intelligence as Lelouch. Some people are oblivious, what is so wrong about taking that angle with Shirley? It was because she was oblivious that made her fun to go with, and in the end she finally resolved herself, she finally realized her feelings for Lelouch and even though he was the result of her father's death, she still loved him. And the point of Ashford is supposed to be a bit unrealistic, I fail to see why they have to take this amazingly realistic angle.
Oh, and about Shirley's father and the impact it made on Lelouch. I think you missed the point with that. Lelouch, up until that point, had gone through the stages of his rebellion thinking that everything was fine, he didn't realize until that moment that he is the cause of people's deaths, or if he did realize it, he didn't realize how severly people are affected by his actions. Ultimately, he had to make a choice, to accept his actions and go forward, realizing that people will die, he would kill parents, and grow up out of his dream world. I think GWOtaku said it best with the C.C. quote, she directly challenged him, I thought it was good development of Lelouch.
