Rebirth of the Rebellion - Code Geass R2 Talkback (SPOILERS)

Why do I get this strange feeling that fan service is about 90% of the reason you watch any anime. There is such a thing called good plot, as well as good story line. Gundam 00 had both. I found Code Geass to be much more boring in comparison, actually. Thats not to say that it wasn't just as exciting, either. Geass had some wonderful moments.

haha yea I paused the episode on that rating list of lelouch's and poor Kallen.

She's maxed out in corabat ability and loyalty and then her charisma and intelligence is in the pits. She actually loses out overall to Kaguya-sama hah.

Go Kaguya!

Oh, we've known she was a ninja since the ending of the first season. But I never thought they would actually go all out and give her a short but sweet, SUPER SWEET fight.

Never underestimate the power of Loli.

Someone else said this in a comment on a blog:

Oh, how true. The way she stabed V.V. in the head and what she said was the most badass moment of this season.

I'd argue there's enough ignorant people who would. You only have to look at the muRABlinging that goes on in political campaigning to see that. There are alot of people with being a patriot at the front of their mind who will use it to justify anything, the kind of people who believe their countries are always justified in what they do. It's a very hard to concept to pin down.

Years from now, should I forget everything else about Geass, I'll probably have that particular scene burnt into memory, even if I couldn't remeraber where it was from.

Certainly, I agree that there's a strong case to be made. No one should be surprised if it's ever confirmed, and not just because of previous mistaken deaths in Code Geass. Anyone denying that must have been watching blindfolded, or else they have some sort of personal hangup about people whom they think can't handle death. There are also going to be some who think survival somehow robs the ending of its power, but if they believe actual death is the only source of impact, then they're missing out on a lot. It's also possible that he had no clue.

Still, it's speculation. I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for proof.

Nice to have Geass back, though they really killed this episode for me at one point.

Kallen falling on LeLouch? Funny, I didn't know I'd sturabled into a Love Hina script. "Kallen, will you come to Tokyo Univ--I mean, back to Ashford with me?"

More importantly, the writer for this episode neeRAB to be slapped senseless. Whatever the chess scene was meant to say, it was ruined by Schneizel moving his king into check. Accepting a stalemate or draw is not a CHOICE if there are no alternatives. Anybody that knows anything about chess knows that Schniezel's move is flat out illegal. Kings can't move into check and can never be next to each other on the board. Schnizel wouldn't have made that move, and LeLouch would have said something, so they just flat out screwed it up. Done correctly, he would've made a durab move to create an opening just to bait LeLouch. But it wasn't correct. This isn't some nitpick, chess comes up often enough in Geass that these people ought to know what the hell they're writing about and putting up on the screen.

The characterization elsewhere just barely makes up for it. Xing and the Empress have a nice backstory, and I thought Nina was used effectively. It made Suzaku question himself a bit, it was interesting to see him surprised at how he stopped her from attacking. Her hate and racism is a tragedy, and even her argument with Milly was a bit unhinged. Nina's certainly come into her own, but the way she lashed out against Milly suggests the insecurity and immaturity she insists she doesn't have. She attacks Milly for living an ivory tower life and looking down on others and in the next breath demanRAB her acceptance. At the same time, she isn't totally wrong about Milly using Ashford as a shield either.

I'm with phw on LeLouch's scheme. He came off as the bad guy here, although perhaps that was the point. LeLouch has been coming off as the pure-as-snow good guy lately, we probably needed a reminder that he's still a man that will cause whatever chaos is necessary for the sake of his goal. I can't say I see how this stunt will help his position, but I guess that's for next time.

My feelings on Jeremiah are known, but I suppose it's good that he's now apparently sane and not an unhinged nutcase. If he can be an actual character and not an idiot spouting off "ZEEEEEEEEROOOOOOO!" left and right, then I guess go for it.

But man...they really took a wrecking ball to that chess scene. Its an unforgivable mistake.

They may add them into the opening when they actually play a part in the series. I don't really like the idea of adding new characters so late into a series, so I really wish we got more focus on these guys sooner.

HC, I totally agree, although Kallen also kicked ass in that episode when they were saving Todoh and the other rebels. "See ya!" *Shining Fingers generic ace pilot*

Good question. For all I care the picture diaries can go rot someplace, but I would be interested in the Geass history shorts and whatever other extras may be out there. They sound like something they could package into the final set for season 1.

Japanese fans tend to get more than we do though, so I'd keep expectations low so that we can be pleasantly surprised if it happens.
