Rebellious Goth characters who got on your nervs..

I thought this would be an interesting topic...
anyways for me, Sam Manson from Danny Phantom. I really wanted to shoot this girl, her constant attempts to be "lol different" is the reason why I hated her so much. It was annoying, childish, and just plain stupid..

I didn't hate her, but I didn't see her as goth. Sure she kinda dressed the part and was called goth geek a few times, but she rarely acted the part. So if anything I hate that she labeled herself as something she didn't really seem to be just to be different. She only did it to piss off her parents though right?

Her rebellious need is obviously an attempt to sway her opposite-set parents. For that, I consider it a key part of her character and wished the series had explored it further. So actually, the Goth part of her never bothered me.

My only general annoyance with her is more her environmentalist concern (when she irritatingly forces it on others), her at times hypocritical nature (which I also liked on her because it represented a character flaw and made her human), and the fact that she turned more and more Mary Sue by the last stretch of the series.

Raven, from Teen Titans. She herself and everyone else on the show treats her and talk about her as if she were this weird, one-of-a-kind person when she in fact is nothing but one whiny, moody stereotype. In fact, personalitywise, she just might be the least original character in the Titans gang (and that's saying something, considering Cyborg is in the same team...). I know iv'e said this before, but you give me 10 minutes at your average high-school, i'll round up 20 "Raven" for you. That's how original she is.

Oh, and another thing about her that bugs me is her attitude and constant sarcastic quips. Now, a character of that sort can work for me, but only if her sarcastic remarks are actually witty. You know, funny. And Raven is quite frankly a terrible comedian.

I see you take after your idol. That was one heck of an inventive retort you gave me there! One score for you, one sore butt for me, yes sir!

No, sorry, that was mean. Let's just agree to disagree on this matter, m'kay?

I wanted to see your reaction to me using the word "die" to your response. I think your hatred extends beyond the character. Your usage of the word "idol" suggests that you think that I worship the character. Why?

Hmmm. I never really considered Raven to be much of a goth character. Her sarcasm wasn't particularly funny, I'll agree with that, but I never really saw her as a rebellious character. She didn't really have anything to rebel against. More often than not, she engaged in fun activities with the other Titans. All in all, I found Raven to be a fun and lively character. Quite frankly, I found all of the Titans to be fun and lively, mainly because of the superb art style that brought the Titans to life. It was a nice contrast to the boring, cardboard world of Justice League. Don't get me wrong, I liked Justice League as well. I just feel as though Teen Titans followed in the footsteps of Batman: TAS and Superman: TAS good art while Justice League went in what I believe to be the wrong direction. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I find that Raven actually DOES embrace the wacky world that is Teen Titans, contrary to what others think.

Gwen in Total Drama Island/Total Drama Action doesn't seem rebellious as Sam. Although the only time when she got to my nerves was in the TDA episode "3:10 to Crazytown" when
she decided to broke with Trent, however since the "Aftermath II", they might be some chances then they reconciliate

*sigh* Let's not get into an arguement, please. I see you edited your initial reply to something nicer anyway, and if you had done that before i wrote my response to it, i wouldn't have been such a sarcastic prick. And in all honsety, sorry about that. I just dont like rudeness, and when confronted by it, i tend to get overtly butt hurt and turn into a hypocritcal a-hole. But let's just both shake hands and forgett about all that now, m'kay?

Personally I like Raven, Given she has more character Development in the Comics then the series, but hey, she's still pretty cool.

I agree on the Sam thing, she seemed Really Generic to me,,,

& Rattis, I highly DOUBT you can find 20 gothic girls with super power, but if you could....THAT WOULD BE AWSOME!!! (Yes im being serious.)

BOT: I can't really think of anyone else at the moment.

I too went through a phase of disliking Raven from Teen Titans: TAS. However, it wasn't the character herself who annoyed me (Raven was never my favorite Titan, mind you, but I never hated her either), it was more the character's annoying fan base, and before someone gets out the tar and feathers, allow me to clarify:

Like Batman and Wolverine, Raven has a certain sect of hardcore fans who regard Raven as being either a) a goddess who can defeat any and every foe that was placed in front of her, or b) the only good character in the series. Neither of which is correct. So to clarify, it's the rabid Raven fanboy/fangirlism that annoys me, rather than the character herself. I don't hate Raven or even dislike her; there are just other Titans like Starfire and Robin, that I like more than Raven.

I hope that clears things up.

I agree. TT really destroyed Raven's character when they translated it from the comics to the cartoon (as well as Starfire's), another reason I didn't care for the show.

When I saw the name of the thread I thought immediately that Sam was going to be the target of it. Sure, she had a couple hypocritical moments, especially early in the show, and yeah, she may not be fully Goth (which you probably couldn't do in a kids show of that style), but I don't understand why she gets so much hate from people. Sam wasn't a bad character and she served a major purpose, unlike other characters tied into the main cast (looking at you, Tucker). Oh also, in the show, SHE'S 14! She can be a little childish and immature, because she still is a kid.

And any complaints about her character becoming Sue-ish in season 3 I blame on the rush to finish the show and tie up losse ends before it got canned.

I think your analysis is spot-on, though I slightly disagree with your assessment of Tucker. He was there to do anything that revolved around computers or electronics, so Danny could continue to be a C- student. :)

I like Raven on Teen Titans. I always thought that her Goth persona had more to do with her power - that she has to keep her feelings under tight control or else bad things happen - rather than as a phony self-indulgent self-pitying cynical attitude.

As for Sam Manson, first of all her last name always irked me; was it really supposed to be a shout-out to Charles Manson (as I've been told)? If so, it's in horribly bad taste. Secondly, she was never a true Goth except in dress, and I took her clothing choices to be an act of rebellion. So yeah, she was a bit of a phony. Third, she was a preachy nagging pain at times, for more worthy of the "nag" label than Butch Hartman's other main female character. So overall, I found her only slightly less annoying than the show's main character (but then, the only good character in Danny Phantom IMO is the villain; none of the good guys ever interested or entertained me the way Vlad did).

Gwen in Total Drama Island is just a stereotype for the most part. The only time she became somewhat likable was when she was slowly won over by Geoff's enthusiasm for life. Otherwise she's blah.

Raven was damn near a Mary Sue in the original comics (and I don't throw that term around lightly!) Not to mention whiny as heck. The show's Raven's character only really faltered a few times like Season 3 or that Tokyo movie. But otherwise she's, IMHO, superior to the original character in just about every way. :raven:

Starfire's debatable. I feel that there was nothing inheritely wrong with the show's character, but they did do a bad job developing her as the show went on (no season arc was dedicated to her, and her naivete about the ways of Earth stayed the same when it should have gotten better.) So yeah, I'm kinda torn on Star.

Yes, that's exactly it. Though I think some of her gloominess and cyncism is genuine. Judging by the "origin episode", she seemed to be more shy at first and developed that attitude because Beast Boy began to annoy her so much. :p

Er, aren't ALL the TDI characters stereotypes?
