Rear end on 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee ?

I've got a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited edition with the 5.9 Litre 360 in it. It has all time 4 wheel-drive in it, and i think this has something to do with the clanking and cracking sounds in the rear end. I don't like what Jeep did with making it all time 4 wheel drive. What could be causing this? It is mostly when you turn. I know this jeep has 280,000 Miles on it but the rear end has been checked out numerous times starting from 2004 and no one can find the problem. Could it be that there isn't enough Rear end fluid in it? Could it have something to do with the transfer case? Please let me know......
 
If it does it more when turning, I would suspect worn clutches and/or bearings in the differential if it is equipped with a limited slip or locking rearend. It could also be that the limited slip additive was not replaced when the gear oil was drained. However, with that many miles, I would expect it to be more likely that the differential is worn. That's the funny thing about driveline noises though, the sound can travel throughout the vehicle and make it seem to be coming from one place when it's actually coming from some place else.
