Rear Bike Axle Stripped. What can I do?

I was dumpester diving recently when I found an old Rivera bicycle. Everything on it i got working. Except a slight problem on the back tire. I was repacking the bearing when i noticed the bolts were really rusted on to the rear axle. I tried and tried to get it off until I tried using some vice grips and a crescent wrench. I completely stripped the axle and wasn't able to get the bolt off. What options do I have? The rim is 26 x 1 3/8... I'm hoping I won't have to buy a new tire, and i have plenty of old mountain bike tires around. So I'm hoping I can swap some part or something. Any help would be greatly appreciated
 
I think you answered your own question... you'll need to replace the axle. Maybe one of your existing axles will work.

Keep in mind that 26 x 1 3/8" wheels are larger diameter than 26" mtb wheels. I have no idea why but thats the way it is. If the tire size is listed as fractional it is a larger diameter wheel. If the tire size is listed as decimal (ex: 26 x 1.95) then it is smaller diameter. They are not interchangable, but the axle MIGHT be.
