Biopsies are very common as part of an endoscopic exam and are just done in the event they find an area of serious inflammation. In many cases they don't even do the biopsy because they don't find anything of concern, but GERD can be an early warning sign for Barrett's esophagus so they'll biopsy any suspicious looking tissue to check for Barrett's.
