REALLY NEED HELP WITH MY STEREO OR SPEAKERS IM NOT SURE................?

well im not sure if its my speakers because when I put the volume all the way up. My speakers start to get all distorted and whatever is playing starts to break up. So im not sure if I need like a amplifier i have a little 400 watt one but i dont know wether or not to buy new speakers or like buy a new stereo.
