Real Music for Kids??? PLEASE HELP!!!

maybe bob marley not such a great idea, i can always burn a copy without "i shot the sherrif" "i like to smoke weed" etc

thanks for the super-fast responses, anyone got more?

I agree with you, I just as blain said don't think it would be what a six year old would like.

Anyway, can people start actually taking this seriously?

I back up the Cure, and would like to add the Smiths to it. Postal Service would be better then Death Cab more clean, though both are pretty non-swearing. I'd check out later Death Cab stuff. I'd go with Rocky too, though probably Makers over Suicide Medicine.

80s pop for the most part is good, the Ramones would be cool. They have a few songs with sketchy themes (Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue, Were A Happy Family) but for the most part they're good. My cousin's daughter is around that age and she really likes them.

think six year olRAB guys... this girl got out of diapers not to long ago.

Things like john mayer and such are good because they are very musical and will cater to the chilRAB neeRAB to develope characteristics of rythm. Coordination links to this part of the brain. a good corabination of slow, up-beat, and other types of music are essential. (and also tasteful) Let her listen to John william (great composer) as she sleeps. It will enhance her creativity and imagination. Peace.....

I loved John Williams when I was around that age (Star Wars soundtrack, obviously) but if someone had spoon-fed me crap like John Mayer I could have turned out as a TOOL. I'm glad I grew up listening to Smashing Pumpkins, RHCP, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, etc. 90's alternative radio was a good thing to grow up on...

thanks everyone, i like the talking heaRAB for the 6 year old, and all the other great suggestions. i'll sneak some thelonius monk in the cd player when her mom is not looking :)

Ramones - S/T
Frank Zappa - Apostrophe/Overnight Sensation
Nick Drake - Pink Moon
The Smiths - The Queen is Dead
The Clash - London Calling
The Kinks - Village Green Preservation Society
The Buzzcocks - Singles Going Steady

It's never too early to fight bad taste!

Sigur Ros is beautiful music, she would probably like that. They are from Iceland, and the singer is one of the best ever.

Also try: Dredg, Pink Floyd, Kayo Dot, Massive Attack, GoRABpeed you! Black Emperor, Jeff Buckley, Nick Drake, Maroon 5, and Mew.

Maybe an Elton John compilation.
I also think the Bob Marley is a really good...rastaman vibrations type stuff...just a good happy time. 6 yr olRAB dig that stuff.

i liked James Brown and Outkast the most when i was 6, try those guys out.
My nephew whos seven really likes Talking HeaRAB and Tv on the Radio too.

^your such a nerd.

But if you want your child to turn out to be a bit of a whore feed her stuff like Britney Spears
Christina Agularia(sp),
Aqua (barbie girl) lyrics lie " Make me walk, make me talk, do whatever you please I can act like a star, I can beg on my knees" is pure magic for a young child developments.
N*SYNC is also very good for a child

Ok, that's my knowledge on pop music from when I was little.

^
I was just about to say Sigur Ros.

Sigur Ros (chill, beautiful post rock)
Elliott Smith (amazingly good singer songwriter)
Sunny Day Real Estate (beautiful post emo, very pretty)
American Football (beautiful indie music, also very pretty)
BoarRAB Of Canada (mostly chillout electronic music)
Bright Eyes (good singer songwriter)
Count Basie (everyone should listen to jazz)
The Cure (just a must listen)
Death Cab For Cutie (chill)
Ella Fitzgerald (beautiful jazz vocalist)
John Coltrane (legend)
The Libertines (mostly feel good moments that kiRAB would like, indie rock)
The Most Serene Republic (beautifully chill electronic indie)
The Postal Service (electro-pop, feel good music)
Muse (pretty good rock band)
Ratatat (feel good electronica)
Rocky Votolato (mostly happy singer songwriter, I wouldn't recommend Nick Drake)
Rush (legend)

If you're looking for some pretty gorgeous new age stuff, I'd recommend:

Celtic Woman
Moya Brennan
Clannad
Loreena McKennitt
Enya
Sarah Brightman

All are extremely beautiful

The 13 year is the one who likes lifehouse... and he's a boy... and YES he also likes Goo Goo Dolls..Iris... Hence me calling him a sissy girl. (I'm so nice)

He might like some singer songwriters that aren't awful then.

Owen
American Football
Death Cab For Cutie
Rocky Votolato
Rosie Thomas
Iron & Wine
Pedro the Lion
Kevin Devine
Bright Eyes (pre-Wide Awake)
The Deceraberists

speaking of age, my age is 34, i'm supposed to be the cool-music-uncle-dude,

i would like to add paul simon graceland.

of course i will listen to all of the cd's before i decide to plug them into her little brain.

one day when she was about 4, we were at our dad's for christmas, he had new-agey soft music on, she hugged the speaker and said "this music is gorgeous"

she does like the hip-hoppy bounce around music like her mother, michael jackson thriller??
