real alternative media player.is it safe?

i am considering downloading real alternative media player.personally i wish the real format itself would just die but i cant play rm or ram files with windows media player.i used real player years ago and it was crap.big,bloated and full of spyware.is real alternative safe as far as spyware and virus issues go? also some say its legality is in question.if you use real alternative please give me your honest opinion.thanks for your input.

It is safe, but why dont you try vlc player instead plays anything. I have included a fix for wmp and also a link for free codecs.

I used the real alternative plugin to watch .rm files with media player classic. It works just fine.
