Re-watching films - a bad habit?

A few years ago I used to watch and re-watch films to death. Old favourites and any new ones I liked I'd watch them all the time. I've been trying to break this habit because there are so many films in the world to discover. Instead of wasting time watching old favourites that I know inside out, I'd rather watch something new.

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with re-visiting films you enjoy, but it's something that for me personally seems a bit of a waste. After watching for the fifth-ish time there's nothing new to discover, even with the more complicated films.

Yes, ive watched over 185 films so far this year, and only one has been seen more than once. There are so many films i am desperate to watch again, but the experience of watching a new film and that small chance of stumbling across a classic always wins me over.

In the past i used to watch my favourites all the time and had a big dvd collection. Now i just rent new films all the time and go to the cinema. Im sure in a year or 2 when ive watched most of the old films i want to see, ill re watch alot

I'm renting a lot more too now - I used to buy films I knew I already liked and they'd just sit there unwatched (because, of course, I'd already seen them!). I finally realised what I was doing and joined a couple of rental places.

I do the same thing with books - no longer re-read old favourites but branch out and try new authors, new genres. It doesn't always work but I've found some real gems by following recommendations or just picking up ones I like the look ok.
