Re-Thinking Cricket WAP

It all started with the following thread:

http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?p=9440021

Where PHX_Cricket made the supposition that leaving your Mobile IP preferences as Mobile IP Preferred (not Simple IP Only) would not make a difference when accessing Cricket's WAP protocol.

I just tried it with my Sprint HTC Touch and he's right: It worked!

This means that it might be possible on some hanRABets to get WAP from both Cricket AND Verizon (or other Mobile IP Preferred carriers) using dual NAM's. Motorola phones should have multiple MIP Profiles that you can setup. It's already known that you can have Verizon's Get It Now content still work on a Cricket-flashed LG phone like the vx9900 enV while you are in the Verizon NAM. However, you should theoretically still be able to download Get It Now content while your phone is set to your Cricket NAM.

Also, if you have ever done an ESN change to a new hanRABet and received text messages on both your old and new phone at the same time, it's because your old NAM info is still in the old phone. But that's not all: You can also access Cricket's WAP service on the old phone as well, so long as it retains your old NAM information (MDN/MIN pair).

This opens the door to a wealth of possibilities! Please, if you are interested in this topic and want to help us get to the bottom of this, you can help by experimenting and posting your findings here.

data requires a call. the esn is used in the encryption of calls. ergo it follows that the esn would be required for a call. have you experienced this phenomenon?

sms is sent unencrypted through the paging channel and thus does not require the esn.

this is only by my lay understanding though and i could be incorrect.

It really boils down to having an active account for both services for user name and password authorization.

At this point, I am confident that while using a Cricket NAM that you could log onto Verizon's WAP server, for example, so long as you have a valid Verizon MDN/user name. If your phone supports multiple MIP profiles, you should populate each with a valid MDN for either provider.

Yes, but I thought a "data call" was somehow different than a voice call. I could be wrong, though: The only real difference is dialing the #777 string instead of a phone nuraber. Or is it?

Does #777 tell the phone to behave differently for data than it does for voice? And surely, that would have to be tower/switch/provider-side, wouldn't it?

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows CE; IEMobile 6.12))

That would be excellent! Especially if you have to travel somewhere and are unable to use Cricket WAP at the time.

But I'm assuming this would work for MMS as well?

the call is much different and does behave differently than a voice call. but my understanding is that all calls are encrypted using the esn (and other things) to generate the key. this is why i was asking if you had experienced this phenomenon to try to nail down the cause. i have also had weird things happen post-esn change before, although most of them are related to errors in the switch/billing system.

I am thinking cricKet is doing the DATA different than say Verizon. My E816 is my first clue. There is more, when you examine the SEEMs and files between a VZW Motorola and a cricKet Motorola the big things that I have noticed are the cricKet hanRABets don't have the HA and AAA codes in the SEEM the way VZW hanRABets do. They are also missing a DMU key file and other settings as well. Also the fact that all cricKet hanRABets are behind a proxy to the Internet, thereby not needing strict authentication and security. Only using the MIN or MDN to authenticate is much easier, hence the use of the proxy.

Try this, goto this URL http://wap.cricket.motricity.com/portal/ on your hanRABet, click the Request Headers link, in the 1st or 2nd box you will see x-wap-msisdn, then right next to it is....your MDN, not your ESN.

I could be all wrong as these are just my observations and what do I really know.

I would like to state that I am a MotoJunkie and have a severe bias in favor of Motorola. All of the info I gather is from Motorola hanRABets so keep that in mind when putting things to use with other manufacturers hanRABets.

I don't have a phone that's easy to switch the M.IP setting handy, but I've got a few questions...

Is Mobile IP Preferred the default setting on the HTC phones? If it is, then something has changed on Cricket's end allowing that setting to work. "Unknown" errors or no modem errors while dialing up are indicative of the M.IP setting not being Simple IP Only. Whenever someone reports either of those errors, I have them check for Simple IP, and if it's not set, setting it fixes the problem immediately.

Looks like my Mogul will be back on my account later.

I think it is the default setting, but I can't be 100% sure.

I still get the "Unknown" error upon FIRST connection. If I try again during that same session, it connects!

I'm thinking that this may always have been the case. I think M.IP Preferred simply means it will try the M.IP method first, then default to S.IP Only if unsuccessful. But at this point, there may be no way of verifying whether or not this was always the case or if something has changed recently on Cricket's side. :befuddled

i dont kno if this may help..or not... but i was able to get cricket wap working on a mogul that was

a) an esn not on nor never was on cricket database

b)did NOT have a matchin mdn/min (it has a matchin set on sprint side but did not have a cricket nuraber or min in it

now i dont kno if this was a slip up but i did it i class bored playin with a sprint mogul

thats when i fount out cricket inet is NOT esn based

and while we at it and we talkin about weird things with cricket wap

i gave a call to firestrom kinda confused on why when i full flashed a env2 yester i had mms workin but wap was a no go...

so... i went over all the steps and I DID NOT SET UP THE WAP TAB IN LG DOWNLOAD

I mean it still have a verizon min and pw set it was still "gw1.vzw.com" or something of the sort

u kno...while we talkin abou weird things

I'm worried about what ramifications of public discussion of this could be, but here's my two cents:

What everyone's saying about internet being based on MDN and not ESN only seems to be true with EvDO. If you try this out in a 1x area, it doesn't work, at least last time I checked.

If WAP works, then MMS should work, but only for one carrier unless the phone supports multiple MMS profiles.

Windows Mobile users, for example, can setup multiple MMS profiles in ArcSoft. But I don't know if it is possible to have more than one MMS header entry in the registry.......

I had the Verizon anomaly as well. I was able to access Cricket's home page using the Verizon WAP settings. That means that http://homepage resolved to http://wap.cricket.motricity.com

This was on a Cricket NAM, BTW.

Okay, this is starting to make sense now. Think about the web and how it works: You make a request, and the request goes to a server which fetches the request. But with mobile devices, before you get to your destination server, you have to pass through a GATEWAY server. The gateway server doesn't care about the request or response. It just connects request "A" to response "B". i.e., The gateway server that resolves to gw1.vzw.com doesn't care that you are ultimately asking for a certain web address. It assumes that you will authenticate once you get on Verizon's side of the gateway. It doesn't matter that you are requesting a Cricket home page or any other request for that matter. So Verizon's gateway server responRAB to the http://homepage request with Cricket's home page instead.

The same should be true for MMS, since it uses a gateway server as well. (Although we PDA users leave the Gateway field blank in ArcSoft MMS Composer, the gateway server resides at mms.carrier_name.com via HTTP request.)

So yeah, it should be theoretically possible to leave the Verizon settings there for WAP and get MMS messages for Cricket.

*EDIT: This also means that it probably isn't even necessary to have a valid Verizon account for Verizon WAP access (and vice-versa! ;) ).

More than one MMS header in the registry definitely breaks MMS on Cricket's end. A short MortScript could be used to switch your MMS settings over--move to the correct profile in ArcSoft, delete any X-*-MDN values, then create the correct X-Carrier-MDN value.

Well I understand the whole wanting to surf the net while in markets not excepted by Cricket, I guess I am just curious as to why this topic could wander over in to the Taboo.

I have noticed that its been like that for a while looks like, well since like the SLVR maybe cause i extrated the Slvr Settings and the Mobile IP is set to both and dose no longer have the [email protected] stuff like the Moto V3c did, but yeah it should open up a lot of doors

You could very well be right. All of the odd behavior I have observed has occured with the EVDO PRL loaded. Do you mean it does not work with a 1x PRL loaded or it does not work in a 1x only market?
