Re-making The Wicker Man

I'm not a fan of remakes, I don't think the new Charlie and the Choc Factory is a patch on the old one....but to start remaking such a classic as The Wicker Man...WHY???

And they've made it american!! So Nicholas Cage is going to be Sgt Howie - does anybody know if this will be adapted as a story set on an island in the USA???

I'm really quite upset by all of this..

Yeah been cringing ever since I heard about the remake last year. As for the Chocolate Factory remake, it was a lot better than the original film imo, I enjoyed it a lot more.

I think the Wicker Man remake is on a small island off America yes.

Again, it's another pointless remake of a film that doesn't need remaking, it's a cult classic.

you'll never beat the original when it comes to horror movies (remakes of Texas Chainsaw Massacre, House of Wax to name just two) - can you image re-making The Omen or The Shining? They wouldn'd dare.... would they???

There is a near remake of The Wicker Man already, but this time in an urban setting. I can't remember the title but Craig Fairbrass was in it so it must've been a top quality production. :D

I really can't understand why all these films are being remade. I mean, why mess with classics? It's almost as though they're trying to go one better than the original film makers.

I don't know, I just think it's daft. I'd much rather sit down and watch the originals. Of course, I'd give the remakes a try, but I doubt my opinion would change.

Terminal lack of imagination in Hollywood?

Why else plunder old classics, Japanese cinema, British cinema, old TV shows etc?

On a positive note, it might nudge some people into looking for the originals (i.e. those people that think the US is the only country that makes feature films).

But the Wicker Man is a film all about context. I can't see how it would work if moved to the US.

No one's considered the choice of director for this, Neil La Bute who's not widely thought of as a 'hack' or indeed a horror director come to that, suggesting we're in for a more cerebral ride. It's not about paganism either - sounRAB like it'll be taking a dig at America's fad for bizarre cults.
Loved the original but IMO this could be one of the more interesting 're-imaginings' to come our way.

I thought there are two Wicker Man remakes in the pipeline - there was a thread on this ages ago. I think one is being produced by Christopher Lee and is more of a reimaginging/sequel. The other is a daft Nic Cage vehicle. I might be wrong though.

Can't find the original thread but imdb has this limited info on 'May Day'

The reason that these classic british films are being remade is because the english company that owned the films(ealing i think) were bought out by carlton which went bust, and the company was bought by an american firm ,this included all the back catalogue. So that is why we are seeing remakes of :
The manchurian candidate.
The italian job
The wicker man and maby many more.
As usual the americans are taking credit for some brilliant outstanding writing and work done by us little old brits,

It would be criminal to remake the Wicker Man. My friend who lives very nearby to the villages where the film was shot - took me round to the old school house (although privately owned now), the ruined church opposite and some of the streets in Scotland where it some of it was filmed. They aren't advertised "as seen in the Wicker Man", but once you've seen them - you know you've been to the places!

This is one film they should leave as it is - a remake will be ... well, pants!

What is it with these people. I have not yet seen a remake that in anyway improved on the original. And in most cases didn't even come anywhere near being as good.

What are they trying to say , that all storylines have been exhausted and the only way forward is to rewrite ?

The Americans are the worst offenders for remakes , as well as rewriting history to suit their own enRAB.

I totally agree - but I suppose one positive thing is that people may wish to seek out the originals and realise you shouldn't mess with them! Much like covers of songs!

it was reported that after the bombing of The Island in the states hat hollywood execs are now cranking out more and more remakes and films based on old tv shows as theyre afraid to try new things...its sad really
