Re-evaluating Spider-Man 3

I know Spidey 3 is a flick almost as hated as the Star Wars prequels & Indy 4 but now the dust has settled is it really all that bad?

Thomas Haden Church rocks as Sandman & the scene where Spidey first meets the New Goblin is superbly executed.

To my mind the problems all stem from Venom.

The character sucked in the comic books (a costume with super powers:rolleyes:) so is it any wonder it didn't translate overly well as a concept on screen.

Hopefully Sam Raimi will go back to kicking it old skool in Spidey 4 & leave anything non- Ditko related (Venom/Carnage) well alone.

I m quite fickle really, a film has to be absolutely unwatchable at the cinema for me to not like it. I enjoyed Superman Returns at the cinema but now watching it on Blu-ray the story is dreadful and I hate it. Even though Im a massive superman fan, I would prefer never to watch it again..

Now.. back to your original question, I loved every single Spiderman movie at the cinema, but I can only watch spidys one and two at home, I liked spidy 3 at the cinema but I cant watch it no more. The story is boring to me. loved the SFX though..

I think I get to excited with anticiaption of these superhero blockbusters to not take in the movie. I could never be a critic.

anyways, no I still cant stand it:D

The problem with the film is that it was originally planned to be Sandman and The Vulture (played by Ben Kingsley) but someone, somewhere, put pressure on him to fulfil fan wishes to put Venom in a Spider-Man film. Raimi doesn't even like the character, he didn't even know the name of its creator (Todd McFarlane)... but he put the character in, and obviously did it incredibly badly!

Well, the whole evil bio-organism turns Peter into an emo with a smug sexy attitude who can do a Saturday Night Fever strut, turn him into an excellent piano player and dancer story just didn't work and destroyed the film.

He also took out Venom far too easily, and it was the right time to let a character like Venom escape for even nastier occurances in future films, but Raimi killed off the character.

So all in all, terrible film.

Its just the story was all over the place. We had Gwen Stacey, the evil costume, Harrys amnesia, Sandman, Venom, more MJ/Peter guff etc. It was just too much & not well executed imo. Plus that ridiculous strutting scene really makes me cringe along with the dance scene in the jazz bar. If it had just been Sandman & New Goblin & Raimi had trimmed the fat, it could have been amazing.

Hell Im saying this as a Venom fan, he just didnt belong here.

I thought it was okay. I like the Venom story, but it wasn't executed particularly well in Spider-man 3. Venom is supposed to be a bully to Peter Parker - not just an evil being trying to kill him. There was no psychological play between the two characters, because Spidey was too busy fighting Sandman.

I didn't think the film was any worse than the second one, though.

I think it is that bad. I own it on DVD and have watched a couple of times but it is so cluttered. They just tried to pack too much into one movie and the result is one big sloppy mess.

Why the re-hash of Peter and MJ's problems - we did that already.

I wish Gwen Stacey had been used more cleverly. They should have killed her (since she dies in the comics) and it would have made the "dark Spidey" angle of the movie actually have a point and be as sinister as the marketing people mislead us into believing it would be. Gwen could have died as a tragic result of Peter and Harry's fued and it could have been the kick up the arse they both needed to grow up. But instead she's just used in a cheap and boring Peter & MJ have more problems plot, and the "dark Spidey" stuff consists of...Peter dancing and eating cookies.

If they'd gone for a less is more approach, too, it would have been much more coherent, but as it is I really struggle to follow it when I watch.

Nothing wrong with Spidey 3. It's fun, juvenile twaddle, same as all Superhero comics are, so don't expect Shakespeare going in and you won't be disappointed.

For me it's the weaker of the three but it's not awful. Just too chaotic and like previous posters have mentioned the Saturday Night Fever stuff was just appalling.
Topher Grace was badly miscast too. All I kept thinking when he was on screen was "It's Eric".

The Venom storyline in the comics was brilliant; I vividly remember reading it in the 80s. The Saturday Night Fever stuff was utterly silly. In the comics Peter could not get rid of the symbiote, it refused to let him be and tormented him.

Venom was something far too complex to just squeeze into an already over-packed film. If you're going to do a character like Venom you have to make him the main villain. Venom should have been held back for the 4th film.

Hopefully any future Spidey films will be made by Marvel themselves.

Ain't gonna happen whilst the franchise is a cash cow for Sony.

& in a way I'm kind of glad.

Marvel would only follow suit with the comics & shove Spidey in The Avengers totally negating the whole point of him being a loner.

As I understand it, Sony pressured Raimi to put Venom, in the film. The half-arsed why he did so meant that Venom haters and Venom Fans all got a thoroughly disappointing and cluttered film.

Hopefully Raimi can redeem the otherwise enjoyable franchise with Spider 4.

I actually thought the whole Venom/Spidey going bad storyline tied in with the Harry Osborne story much better than the Sandman story, and would have prefered Sandman being dropped.

I rather think the issue was the ONE should have been dropped, and it didn't really matter which. The film was cluttered with half finished ideas for both Sandman and Venom as there was simply no room in the story for both.

Apparently Spiderman 4 will have 240 villains all with 30 seconRAB of screen time. It's the only way Sony could top Spiderman 3.

Err ... if we were going to conduct an empirical sample I'm sure that would be the case.

However I was merely illustrating the point that Spider-Man 3 is widely disliked on a scale similar to the fanboy ire normally reserved for George Lucas. ;)
