re:1994 Dodge Caravan A/C problem?

In the past year, I have had the serpentine and tensioner belts replaced. But, when the a/c is turned on, the van is still making a squealing noise. It only makes noise when I attempt to run the air. I recently had a new transmission put in, but the belt problems were prior to this. I cannot afford to buy a new vehicle, so I am trying to keep this one running. Has 87,000 miles on it, and since I am a widow, I am starting to think I am fixing things twice--as they have replaced the serpentine belt 2 times in 2 years. The diagnosis is that the air compressor is going, and that will be very costly. Just want some feedback whether or not that problem would make the squealing noise when the a/c is turned on.

If the compressor has been deemed (going out) then yes it can make a squealing sound. The bearings inside the compressor could easily be bad and they will raise all kinds of Cain. What engine do you have?
My '95 Grand Caravan has the 3.0 liter V-six and it has two belts. One serpentine and one A/C V-groove belt. The A/C belt on mine is separate from the serp and the serp will not have any affect on the A/C functionality.

Since it only sounds off when you activate the A/C and it has been deemed faulty by a shop anyhow, there is a 99.9% probability that the compressor is the cause of the squeal.

you need to also check the belt tensioner on that one, that will cause premature wear on the belt and cause you to have to replace it more often than normal, you should be able to run for a few years on one belt,so there's probably a problem with the tensioner, and if the clutch pack is going bad that to will cause this too happen, and also cause wear on the belt, good luck.
