Rats.... foiled by old age

My bicycle, not me. It seems that I am in better shape than it is. I
am feeling so much better these days and have so much more energy. I did
some spring cleaning yesterday and cleaned out enough crap to make a
trip to the dump. I went from there to my cardiac rehab class and then
after supper I went out to the stables to see the therapeutic riding
gang. I haven't had energy like this for months.

This morning is the first real spring like day. It is sunny and over
50F. I was going to go for a bicycle ride. I went back to the barn, and
started pumping up the tires. The bike started to fall over a bit, not
right over, just far enough that the valve stem tore. So now I need a
new inner tube. Since that one rotted I imagine that the other one is
probably as bad. It may be a good idea to replace the tires too.

I plan on doing the same thing in the next hour. Sixty degrees today and
the snow left fast. I put new tires on last year and I always keep extra
tubes and take a small tool kit with me. A ride to the "rails to trails" is
about three miles away and I plan on taking my fat 260lb bod for a twenty
mile spin. I have three bicycles, touring, crossover and a mountain bike. I
think I will choose the crossover and burn up the homemade potato soup with
lots of ham for lunch. I will leave the loaded touring bike at home for
now, I do not want to over do it my first time out this year :)

I was inspired today by the 83 year old Japanese woman that escaped the
tsunami.

I put new tubes and tires on the bikes at the end of the season to be
ready for the first 60 F day like today but just eating a quick sandwich
and back to work so likely it won't happen.

Tires and especially tubes don't seem to last nearly as long anymore.

I have noticed that with replacement tubes and tires that I have bought
at department stores. The bike is about 5 years old and these were
original tubes and tires. Before heading over to the bicycle shop I had
a good look at the tires and noticed small bulge in the one that was
still inflated, so I figured that I might as well replace both tubes and
both tires. The store sold the same make as the originals, so I am
counting on getting a few years out of them.

The good news is that it warmed up enough to get out for a ride on the
bicycle and on the motorcycle.

Yep, and they are becoming increasingly common. I am starting to find
fruits and vegetables that are products of China. I won't buy them.

We have to be careful about such blanket statement and never
underestimate the enemy.

I got some kitchen cabinets that were made in China and they cheap and
beautiful and well built solid wood construction - although, the gal at
the Home Depot told me that the emit poisonous gasses. Luckily, the
cabinets came with a free pair of gas masks! :-)

My Ibanez Artcore AF75 guitar is well made and beautiful and cheap. Too
bad it just sounds so-so.

My iPad was made in China - it's cheap, shoddy, crap. Two out of three
ain't bad. :-)

The second thing I thought of was all the rats that they use for
medical research, some for age-related conditions such as dementia,
but for all kinds of stuff. There are special strains of rats and
mice bred to study certain conditions. There's one called the
"Sardinian alcohol-preferring rat."

That is an old movie, are you referring to the Italian version with the

Complain to Apple. They have people whose job it is to secure quality

I'm kidding - the iPad is a remarkable manufactured product. Looks like
it was made by Germans. Anal Germans at that...

The reality is that the quality is set by the standards of a company and
not a country. I have a Hyundai Sonata that's not made in Seoul but
Montgomery Alabama and it's got a great build quality. Who woulda thunk it?

The replacements I got at the bike shop were made in Taiwan. I suppose
that I could say they were not made in China, but the Chinese would
probably argue that Taiwan is part of China.

Why does it matter as long as they meet the approved standards... just
about all dangerous manufacturing that heavily pollutes has been moved
to the Orient, China has no EPA and OSHA. My entire Kubota tractor is
made in Japan, it's far superior to the John Deere counterpart... in
fact all those JD garden tractors one sees in front of Lowes, Home
Depot, etc. are made in the Orient... those things aren't even
tractors, they are riding lawn mowers.
