i have recently seen a rat, which looks like a pretty younf one as its not that big....comes to my garden daily tryin to get at the guinea pig food in the cage ( we first found it in the run with the guinea pigs eating its food!) I dont really want to kill it, plus Im a bit worried about puttin out poison when i have a dog....is it really causing that much harm, do i really need to get rid? Surely theyre around everywhere anyway, but we just dont usually see them? Also are there any diseases it could pass onto my dog?
after reading a few answers I think Ill get a humane trap and set it free somewhere...are there any reasons why this shouldnt be done?
in answer to the last suggestion that he may be a pet rat... well, hes not that big so I figured a young one, but hes very sweet looking, and quite cheeky, he doesnt run off when u bang on the window...so maybe...only thing is hes a brown one...do you get brown domestic rats?

rats are harmless. Don't let it bite you cause it may have a disease but it's not harmful until he gnaws on something you don't want eaten.

kill it ,these animals are vermin and once they find a good place to nest and plenty of food supply they will multiply rapidly and eventually invade your house.
rats carry many diseases both harmful to you and your dog.
rats can get aggressive when cornered and will attack you if it feels threatened or cornered.
just a note to tell you ,if you want rats keep it going with your guinea pig food, just remember when you have a major rat infestation who told you to kill it,dont be soft hearted these are vermin and you need to kill it as soon as possible
