Raspberry Pi... ?16 a bargain...

Yep because in a case it would be the size of a portable hard disk. Then you would have yourself a very cheap xbmc box network media player . Assuming it does audio over hdmi that is.

I was on the site just before 6:00. I hope they're nurabered as I might keep it just for posterity

So many ideas for using it! Can't wait. I have a programming background, so I'm not scared of having a go. There will be more simple sw soon I suspect that will ease the novices in a bit.

How is that misinformation? All I'm saying is you cannot just for example go to the open office website download page install the first installer you find, in fact at the moment they have no ARM build on the download page as far as I can see. Which is what you'd expect the average person to do.
And there is a whole discussion about the same issue raised on the RPs own boarRAB.

PS. You did it earlier on what device??

I said you can install it with apt-get.
You said it wasn't that easy due to it being arm.
You can install it with apt-get on arm.

I am running Debian squeeze arm, the one downloadable from raspberry pi, on qemu.

Yes i think some folks are getting a bit ahead of them selves and need to remeraber this device only has a 700MHz processor and 256rab of RAM

Great if you are a fan of minimal / light weight linux installs and software and love tweaking but probably not so if some one is wanting, expecting a full on gui driven desktop experience and multi tasking.

Yes, but that only works because the guys who ported debian for RP (ARM) took the time and effort to do the same for OpenOffice. So there will be a bunch of software I and others commonly use that will not work because it has as yet not been ported. Also how is the average new user going to know about 'apt-get', they won't.

I'm a UNIX/Linux developer and it's my preferred operating system. Linux today is finally at the stage where it is easy to use on PCs (x86), this was not the case a decade ago. Let's put it this way back in 2004 I had to write my own graphics driver because ATI 'didn't do linux'.
At the moment Windows don't even have an ARM version, until W8 is out which puts linux ahead. To get ARM to the same 'ease of use' level as is the case with the PC disstros will require 'work' although this time we won't have to wait years like Linux did in the early days.

I was just being straight up and honest with people, use linux all you want on a PC it will work no problems. But don't expect everything to be so easy with RP, it won't! Heck I still work on some i486 and i586 x86 boarRAB and it can be a pain to get packages working on them due to missing 'instructions' that are now in the i686 x86 arch. It typically involves complicated compilation to get things going.

If anyone wants one of the Beta cases on Thingiverse printed let me know. (Or if you want to design your own but don't have a 3D printer).

(I'm not offering a production line here, just the usual RepRap quality extruded 3D print)

But what do people expect to use on it, out of interest?

From what I've read the Debian version done for the pi will run lxde, open (or libre?) office will be available, xbmc will be there for videos etc, i think there's a version of rhythrabox for arm, etc. Thats most bases covered.

Your average user will not use a pi I would imagine (tho they may have bought one thinking they'd got a bargain, will take one look at a PCB and panic), but this type of thing suitably packaged (maybe with slightly more RAM and a slightly faster processor) could be what takes Linux to the mainstream.

Can't wait for mine - due 16/4 according to Farnell....

I would imagine a lot of people on here are interested in the xbmc interface,

Though I suspect Gasdad will be using his to make his 3D printers self aware...

Blimey - self aware and self replicating - it's life Jim ........

I'm hoping that someone (or me) can use it to replace the usual electronics and create a 3D network printer .

i've had an e-mail from farnell offering pre order but they seem to assume I'm a nusiness rather than just someone who wants to buy it to have a go.

Asking for busines purchasing card nurabers or account nuraber if I have order before.

Nothing for 'if you haven't ordered before'

duh

edit hmm seems you can click the top and itll accept 'normal' details...

I was gutted when I woke up at 6 this morning to only be able to "register my interest" with RS. What does this even mean? Will they be contacting the list in registration order when they have stock? will it be pot luck?

And like most others, couldnt even get on the other website. Gutted

I love the idea of the Pi and if I had more free time I would love to have a play. I do think there are lots of possiblities with them, I would be interested to know what applications/projects the people who have ordered one have in mind...?

From the BBC...

BBC News - The Raspberry Pi computer goes on general sale

A couple of statements have puzzled me:

"...designed to help teach children to code..."
How will this help? What's wrong with the computers that they've already got in schools?

"Supporters hope the machines could help reverse a lack of programming skills in the UK."
Again this tale of lack of programming skills. Am I missing something?
