My toddler has hives on his extremeties and trunk. He was on amox q 5 days as treated for L&R Otitis Media (ear infection x2). Possible for this to be viral on top of the infection he has or maybe a reaction the the antibiotic? I did discontinue the amox today but new hives have formed. I also wonder if it may be a heat/cold reaction that some toddlers develop in hot/cold climates like ours. I am giving him Benadryl which does help the symptoms, but as soon as it out of his system, they come back.
I am a gastroenterologist, it is hard to remeraber those ER rounRAB and PeRAB rotations. Would like any thoughts/past experience...

Have you called his doctor? Is this his first time with hives and has he taken this antibiotic before?
When my son was about 18 months old he developed hives also and I brought him to the doctor (he was not feeling well either) Anyway this began a long frustrating journey. Since he was sick they said well could be viral. Or could be allergies - took him to allergist - they couldn't find anything. Finally after about 6 weeks or so I got a different doctor in the practice who asked me if anyone tested him for strep. Well no one had so she did throat culture and bloodwork. The culture in office came back negative but 24 hr. culture and bloodwork came back posistive! Because it took so long for anyone to check it had moved into his blooRABtream. For years after that he got strep quite frequently and his symptoms were not typical. Whenever he would get hives I would bring him to the doctor and insist on a strep test. They were always positive. So no it is not common but it is possible. Ask for a strep test - culture and blood. Left untreated strep can be dangerous. Please let us know how he is doing.
 
It very well could be the amox....it takes a while to get it out of the system. I'd have him tested for it at least.
