Wrong in so many ways!

Why do we have to wear uniform at school? I think its just the teachers being petty and controlling. If people wear makeup, don't wear their tie up or their shirt tucked in how does it affect their learning?

I understand why we can't wear huge earrings because someone could pull them out. And in a way I understand why we actually HAVE a uniform- So that people know what school we are from probably. But why do they have to pick on the small things like how short your skirt is,what shoes your wearing, how your tie looks? Can't we add a personal touch to our uniform. American schools don't even have uniform.

1. Instead of learning Im being told to pull my tie up or tuck my shirt in or take my makeup off. Waste of lesson!

2. It makes me angry and then I refuse to do my work because i lose any respect I had for the teachers in the first place.

My school has recently made the uniform rules even more ridic than ever because if your not looking smart enough now you get an hour detention after school. They spend more time lecturing us about uniform rules than they do teaching. And its ok for people to smoke in school, beat people up,swear at teachers. Im not saying any of that is bad but if they need to change anything it should be something like that instead of how people look should it not?

Basically they are ruining my education. Ive been excluded 3 times in just this term. That's how mental they are. And making everyone be sheep's because we all have to be the same. Its ridic does anyone agree?

The main question has the situation exactly right - of course the way you look doesn't affect your learning.

The second sentence is fine - of course school uniform leads teachers to be petty and controlling, wasting their time picking up students on minor details which have no impact on the quality of education provided. Uniform and the enforcement of uniform is the most criminal waste of time and energy in the education system. I would like to see schools spend the time they currently devote to uniform enforcement to dealing with issues of behaviour which actually do have an impact on teaching and learning, such as classroom disruption.

However, in the third paragraph you do a complete U turn by saying that you do actually support the idea of school uniform. Your position is that you do want uniform but you don't want the rules to be enforced. Sadly this is typical of students and many of their parents in the UK education system. Most people are in favour of uniform but people disagree bitterly over the question of what the uniform should be. Most people want uniform rules enforced but not when it comes to criticising what they or their children are wearing. I find this attitude quite pathetic.

Many successful education systems manage to do without school uniform. I don't believe it has any impact at all on educational standards and it wastes a huge amount of teacher time. At the same time, there are serious behavioural problems in our secondary schools which do have an impact on teaching and learning, which schools are very reluctant to tackle.
