Random Soft Reset???

Ok, weird situation with my T3. I have had the piece for a little over a month now, haven't thrown to many programs on it either. All of a sudden, the piece starts soft resetting itself everytime I put it on, and take it off the cradle.

I don't understand!? It's fine throughout the day, but as soon as I stick it on to charge or sync, it resets, then I can sync it... and as soon as I take it off, it resets again, then I can use it...

Any suggestions? I'm really not to familiar with this piece, so I don't know what's going on here... Thanks!

What error message shows up the screen when you reset? Do you have a friend with a T3 so you can see if the same thing happens in his cradle?

This is not a common problem. One of the things you can do is go to www.freewarepalm.com and download Crash!. Not only won't you have to manually reset the machine, it will aso tell you what program caused the crash, which may help track down the fix.

Um... it doesn't give me an error message when It crashes, and I don't have to manually reset it... it just does it.. that's it...

I take it off the cradle, and it shows me the gray screen w/ the palm circle.. and open up the screen to set the time and date... ????

Be certain that in the hot sync instructions that the system is set to Handheld ovewrites Desktop.

Click on the hot sync icon in the systray and then choose custom then scroll down to where the you see the "System" setting. It should be as noted Handheld overwrites the Desktop".

If it isn't this might cause the symptoms your describing.

Also, make certain that an ant has died on the cradle and is causing some sort of short. You might want to vacuum the cradle or blow on it......

In your early post you said that whenever you place it on or take it off the cradle that's when it does it.

Also check that on the handheld you have the HotSync function set to work on the cradle and not some other accidental setting such as modem or network.

Also did you install any programs that might have attempted to change the hot sync settings such as a "preset" time program that would try and hot sync the program at a preset time of the day. I'd check the settings of any type of program that you added for such a "forced" hotsync command. Perhaps even an none Palm conduit setting could be forcing the issue.

EDIT: Did you install a keyboard driver? The early driver's were a little twitchy....they'd slow down a hot sync and if I recall they'd cause a reset if you didn't disable the driver before putting the device into the cradle.

If you have installed a keyboard and it's corresponding driver check the date of the driver and then be certain to download the latest edition from PalmOne's web site.

It sounds that whatever it is, is not caused by a hotsync, but rather by the Palm registering when the power is plugged in or not. Can you try unplugging the power from your Palm cradle. Then first with the Palm ON, try putting it in and out of the cradle- see if it resets. Then second, with the Palm OFF, try the same- put it in and out of the cradle and see if it resets. Then please report back results.
It may be you have a program installed which triggers something on plugged in power on/off. e.g. Do you have any screensavers installed?

One way to find out if this is some software caused problem on the Palm, is to warm reset. This should prevent such things that might cause this, from loading. Do a soft-reset while holding the "up" button on your d-pad. The reset should happen extra fast. Then try putting the Palm in and out of the cradle (this time with the power all plugged in). Don't do a hotsync in this state, just see if the reset happens, then again report back. To exit this mode, just do a normal soft reset.

No go... so far everything didn't change it... I tried putting it onto the unplugged cradle w/ the power on and it did the same thing, and vice versa... I then tried the warm reset option and that didn't seem to help either... I can't think of any programs that I have installed that would cause this problem... I don't understand it.

I checked the system thing in custom and it does overwrite the desktop. Also, the hotsync is set to sync to the cradle/cable.. Don't understand! what else should I try...

would it help to just format the palm and start over?

let me know

So even in warm reset mode, your Palm crashed on cradle in/out? Blimey that does sound bad. If that really is the case, I'd be suprised to find a hard reset solving the problem, but that is obviously the next thing to try.

Just to be 100% sure, did you actually try putting the Palm in and out of the cradle, whilst in the warm reset mode, or did you exit the mode before trying the Palm in/out of the cradle?

One more thing to try before you hard-reset:- do a soft reset while the Palm is in the cradle. This should reset the battery settings, but be sure to keep your Palm charging for approx 4 hours following a battery reset..

Double check the warm-reset thing, then try the battery reset, and if all else fails, it's gonna have to be a hard reset I'm afraid.

It may help to give us a list of apps that you have added to your Palm. It may job someone's memory if they encountered similar problems, but just aren't remembering it.

I'm not accusing you of anything, but do you have any "controversially obtained software" on your Palm? I have two apps on my Palm that in their respective documentation they say that random resets or other unreliable performance only occurs with the pirated versions of their software. Again, I'm really not accusing you of anything, making any judgements here, or lecturing anyone -- just thought I'd mention it in case that could point you in the right direction for troubleshooting your problem. Trust me, there are plenty of things that could be causing your random resets, so it doesn't mean that you must have pirated apps or anything of the sort.

I was going to suggest the keyboard driver as well. Do you use anything else with the Universal Connector -- maybe a modem or aftermarket charger/USB connector? The UC can be a picky little thing, and I've had problems with it operating my modem after I've been using the keyboard (even after deactivating the keyboard driver). I usually have to do a soft reset between using the different UC devices.

I'm getting some random resets now that I'm running Lightspeed to get rid of the screen buzz. It happens more often than not after playing one of my hi-res games, so I'm sure that has something to do with it. It's worth it though! A pain in the a$$ reset is better than DRIVING ME OUT OF MY FREAKIN' MIND BUZZ in my ears.

Hope you solve it!

YAY.... Well, turns out that everyone was correct on something... I downlaoded a file catalog program to run through the files on my palm, I believe it was called Filez... Um, well... turns out that there were a few left over files on the palm that were causing some problems... and no, nothing was pirated... I believe in supporting the creators of software... most everything i use is freeware or shareware...

So I went through and deleted some extra files on the palm... Probably had to do with some of the semiprofessional files i had installed from freeware sites... and booyah, it works... Thanks for all your help guys, It turned out to just be some leftover stuff... Hah, live and learn!
