racing bikes gears? please help!!!?

if your bike had all shimano gears in one group-set say sora and you wanted to by only one part say the rear mech of another group-set in shimano like dura ace would that still work on tour bike?
 
Things have changed a bit.

New Dura Ace 7900 and new Ultegra 6700 don't allow cross-compatibility with other Shimano groups. The levers on these new groups have different pull ratios for both the brakes and the derailleurs. Hence, a new D/A rear derailleur will not work with Sora shifters. Besides, a D/A rear derailleur won't function any better than an Ultegra or 105 rear derailleur when operated by Sora shifters.
