A bit off topic, since it was about humor, but I don't know if anyone else feels like this. I am trying like HELL to get a job. On many applications they ask for race now (and then have a disclaimer it is for survey and informational use only). I HATE selecting "White" for two reasons - I'm 1/8 Native American but 1/4 Scotch-Irish (and a mix of other nationalities) so I wouldn't put Native American, nor do I think they would consider me that being I'm not more than 1/8. The second and biggest reason I hate to answer "White" is all I can think is, "great, another job opportunity lost to the wonderfulness that is affirmative action".
Maybe that seems wrong but I'm sorry, I have had it happen far too often to dismiss. I've applied for positions that I was more than qualified for and not gotten. Then I would have heard or actually seen the candidate that did and I can name of atleast 3 times the person was African-American who didn't even speak clear conversational English. That wouldn't bother me except that the jobs were always customer-service jobs or jobs where verbal communication was a huge part of their job.
Sorry if this sounds racist but I am sick of being the side effect to an outdated and unnecessary program. Yes, when civil rights were needed because the general opinion was that of ignorance and racist-driven segregation, programs like this that made sure company's hired so many minorities were a necessity. Now, it is not the case. Companies can lose their licenses or atleast be fined huge amounts of money and gain huge public notoriety because of unfair hiring based on racism or sexism. That is all we need in place in my opinion. If a company goes longer than x amount of time without hiring a minority, then deal with them. Don't put something in place that forces ALL companies to hire x amount of minorities. People should be able to hire the most qualified candidate regardless of race or sex.
I also think that women in general are getting too many career advancements because companies are scared of lawsuits. This is happening at my husband's company now. They don't really discriminate in hiring new workers, just once their in at his company, women are typically the ones who advance and most of upper management is women. (I don't mean slightly more than half, I mean more like 80%).
(Note, I am in a city that is very racist, more from the minority side than the majority. That is probably why it is so lopsided here, it is also why we will probably move when my daughter is through high school - it's like another planet here).
