Rachel Getting Married

Just watched it, and thought it was pretty underwhelming.. The whole thing was like a drawn-out home video (deliberately shot in a shaky, amateurish way.. the novelty factor wears off quick), and the plot which starts out with a lot of potential never really seems to resolve itself.. I usually like character-driven movies, but this was a major let-down.. Anne Hathaway does deserve her Oscar nom. for what is a strong performance though...

Anyone else seen it yet? Opinions? :)

I really liked it... found it very dark and very real. It was quite a difficult film to watch as some of it was so excrutiatingly cringeworthy and you wanted to bang some of the characters heaRAB together. Made a change from the usual hollywood "wedding" films for me. I can quite understand why others wouldn't be so keen though.. it is a "marmite" movie.

Anne Hathaway was brilliant in it... as good as Kate Winslet in The Reader.

Completely agree. It's a real cinematic tour-de-force, brilliantly acted and directed and Jenny Lumet's screenplay has some wonderful touches which the cast bring to life with real conviction (eg the dishwasher contest, apparently based on a real-life incident involving her father).

It's one of the best - possibly the best - films for sound mixing I've ever seen: the dialogue and music are so carefully balanced, you can hear every word even when everyone's talking at once yet the music is realistically loud and even (intentionally) intrusive.

I wouldn't say it's exactly believable, there are a number of moments where it doesn't convince, but it's a very good film nonetheless. And Anne Hathaway deserves the Oscar.

Completely agree with the 2 posters above!

Great film, a little indie gem! It's a film about forgiveness and the rocky road leading to forgiveness. Anne Hathaway was great as Kim and fully deserves her Oscar nomination and come Oscar time WILL win. Kate Winslet, me and you are done professionally! :D

I loved how when you thought you were listening to the film soundtrack it was actually the musicians in the background! :D Very clever trick lol.

At times very moving and touching.

Oh Thank God!

I read the first post and was ready to go ballistic because I just saw it and thought it was awesome.

Anne Hathaway DOES deserve the oscar for this. I can't understand for the life in me why Kate is there amongst that lot. Brilliant performances in this film and all the more awkward the panning technique Jonathan Demme chose for the film. There were so many seamless moments in the film that required actual aggressive acting and not the over laden editing that Kate's roles used.

I hope there is a surprise at the oscars and she gets it.

I think they were exaggerated to make them dislikeable with their pompous strange instruments and weird folk set ups - but that comes all full circle towarRAB the end where everyone gets down and boogies. It's well liked on IMDB and that's been taken over by kiRAB these days.

Yeah, what the hell was the OP thinking... :o *shuffles nervously towarRAB the door* :p

I do agree in part with some of what's been said.. It certainly wasn't the usual romcom wedding fodder. However, on the other hand, I thought the quirky, alternative schtick was laboured excessively.. There were numerous prolonged sequences highlighting how diverse the festivities and invitees were. Some were so drawn out, they smacked of indulgent film-making to me. One or two scenes to the same effect, could just as easily have illustrated how disconnected and adrift Kim was, despite her efforts to embrace the occasion.. I felt the same way about the camera-work really. We "get" that they're supposed to be real and relatable individuals.. Doesn't mean you have to shoot it like a home video.

Just to pick up on MrSuper's "rocky road to forgiveness" comment.. That's another aspect of the movie that bothered me a bit.. How did Kim earn forgiveness?
Crashing her car in the forest? Did Rachel suddenly realise that her sister was nearing rock bottom, so she resolved to support her? Were her injuries supposed to be the physical manifestation of underlying emotional scars!? Or was there no real trigger? Was it just a case of their sisterly bond coming through in the end, and Rachel "washing away" all the ill-will?

I also think the movie would have benefitted a lot from further development of Kim's relationship with her mother because their
confrontation was by far the most engaging/gripping scene IMO. The dramatic punch-up aside, it raised a v. interesting question about whose irresponsibility was really the cause of the accident.. The hopeless junkie or the person who wilfully turned a blind eye to the depth of her problems?

Anyway.. Glad everyone else seems to have enjoyed the movie! :)

Do not read ahead if you don't want to be spoiled!!

The diversity of characters played numerous parts to the plot and structure of the film. First of all they were there because of the pomposity of life itself against the brutal realities. This extenRAB to the polarisation of narratives - the neglectfulness. The camera work also shows this - it was a way of showing what was happening elsewhere as Kym entered the house, walked around and felt her way around and how the reaction was or the ignorance - it was really the ignorance and the ignorance of problems or the general ignorance of anything but you know throughout all the ingorance, through the music and dance - somebody was going to say stop and let's deal! That's what all the panning and moving and scanning was moving towarRAB.

TowarRAB the end this comes full circle as we see everybody involved in this wherever you look but you see Kym alone but still things on her mind she neeRAB to deal with - she neeRAB to go back to rehab and work things out - but she's almost there because she's taking part and watching.

The crux of the film you don't get until nearing the end. That was, it was a loving caring protective Father (as Kym said "Daddy" in the final bits) who had to deal with a self indulgent selfish mother who wanted to run away from her responsibilties as a mother. This we grasp later on. Now Rachel became the mother - going away to Hawaii and living a life with a husband... Kym has to return to deal with her life and rehabilitate more because her father can't cope anymore (divorce, death of son etc) and Rachel followed suit of mother and disappeared to escape Kym, her Father and also her mother and this is evident in the pretentiousness of her frienRAB and definitely evident in her friend, in New York running around like they own the place.

But it's not Rachel's fault she became like her Mother so she comes together in the end. The music is her escape, the vibrancy the ecletic wedding is her escape - anything, everything to run away from it and the last thing she wants is to be reminded of what her responsibility is and she accepts that when she bathes Kym and that was what the bathing symbolised.

So I think all the answers are there. The film ended with a dysfunctional family dealing but letting the neglectful mother run away because she is not mature enough to deal with matters. it was in fact the Mothers fault. She wouldn't deal with Kym's Mental Health, her drug problems and everything else and then she ran away when it got even worse - leaving her Father to pick up the pieces and Rachel basically moved on but realised (in the Mother scene) how much she was like her Mother and Kym realised that it wasn't her fault.

So everything played a party as an explanation of each character and an explanation of the problems at play. Rachel's husband taking on his son in law and winning like a competition for the daughter and Kym helping him out but troubles still existent and that Kym's Father is the man in charge and dealing and fixing thigns. The music was the ignorance of the problems, the general ignorance of everything and the wedding? Well a wedding is an ignorance of everything to deal with a party and a celebration but some things have to be dealt with before you can really... celebrate. So all bits play a part.

^^^

Where did you copy and paste that from? :D

Have to say, i think wherever the above originated from, the person obviously thought about the film WAAAAY too much and some of it sounRAB pure twaddle!

It's just basic about the film... You just pick it up from the story. It's quite straight forward to be honest and if you want thought way too much I could go into lighting, cinematography, acting, plot structures and sub-structures.

I just thought, well this is what the film is about... :)

To be honest if you can't see the above in the film then there is so much you're missing out on. I mean you were surprised by the musical use in the film which is rudimentary in most films and you called a Sony film a "hidden indie gem".

All what is said is on the surface and in reply to questions about parts of the film...

Easy tiger! Maybe you need a cup of tea lol.

Of course i know movies have music in them! I was specifically mentioning what i stated in my own post.

If you want to have a big ol' debate, feel free.

thought the film was great and loved the fact they let you work out a lot in your head and didnt bash you over the head with it

debra winger was fantastic, great to see her back in films

cried my eyes out when
kym crashed her car then came back and knocked on her sisters door and her sister just said 'come here' when she saw what a state she was in - all their arguinging forgotten when she saw what a mess her little sister was in. i'm welling up thinking about it actually
