R1 to 1098

Hey all,

I just test rode a yellow 1098... Entirely by accident, as it were. I'm currently sitting on a 2002 Yamaha R1, but just 20 minutes on the 1098 has me sold. I couldn't find anything about it that I didn't like. Assuming that everything goes well, I should be picking it up around the end of the month. That being said....

I tend to make pretty long trips (800-1000) miles about once a month during the summer months.... Can anyone shed some light on how these bikes do on the long haul? (Comfort, baggage, etc)

The sport bike portion (leaning over, whatever) is not a problem... I'm just focused more on how the seat would feel after doing 450 miles in one day.

Thanks!!

You should be fine. I don't like using both hands anyway. I just rest on the tank. I normally set my head on my left arm atop the tank and ride with my right hand.

You can change the seat, if you want.

That's great, 800 to 1000 miles trips, once a month.

I'm definitely going to get a throttle meister (or something similar) for it. I have a cheapie throttle lock on the R1, and I'm addicted.

If the seat can easily be changed around, then I'm not too worried.

I love it... I put 12k on the R1 since last Feb, and that's with keeping off it October '07 through April '08. The trips are mostly in the summer, but it's great.

One question regarding the head light.... when the lo beams are on, are both lights illuminated? If not, can they be made to act that way?

Hey R1FSB, Same here I own a 2005 Raven R1. Test rode the 1098 and bought it that week. Transfered the plate off the R1 to the 1098. I have just put 400 miles on her and it it so much fun to ride. FYI 25 MPG on the 1098 TERMI slip ons, chip and air cleaner. I aint bitchen but will now keep R1 for daily driver. The DUC is to sweet to use everyday in my opinion.

Steve..25 MPG How do you manage that ??? I have to ride it like I stole it just to dip in the 30's..I average low 40's .. 1098s, FULL TERMI's, Chip, and Air Filter.... You need to have your bike looked at... Does your gear smell like fuel after you ride? If so WAY RICH !!!!

Now to the topic of this thread, I can do a 300 mile day, w frequesnt stops..The riding position on this bike is for racing, not for sport touring.. But I'm not complaining... I love my Duc.. And I won't lie, I have an 01 SV650s for my daily commuter..But on the weekends and of course the local bike night... DESMO COMES OUT TO PLAY !!!!!!

My kind of ride! I rode 520 miles on my 848 in one day, and I think the seat is pretty much the same if not exactly the same as the 1098. My ass was sore the next day, but during the ride it didn't bother me. You'll be fine. If not, you can buy one of those fancy aftermarket seats for a few hundred bucks.

I would recommend buying comfort seats from Ducati or aftermarket comfort seats. They have more cushion, more comfortable and easier for the butt to move around in corners and leaning.

being an avid cyclist both road and mountain I usually never have had any issues with any stock seats on any motorcycle. try sitting on a road bike seat for 5 hours straight! maybe i've just damaged all teh nerve endings in my arse.

anyway, i would think the pain in your wrists from riding will affect you long before the seat does.
