Well that depends on your definition of living...
First, if you define living a just a self replicating object, the first forms of so called "life" were self replicating proteins. Very simply put, these proteins just copied themselves. Granted, I personally highly doubt they did anything else, although we may never know.
If you define living as a self sustaining organism with all that metabolism jazz, then probably the cell would be your answer.
