Questions on Social Science Degree?

I'm currently in high school and I plan to get a Social Science degree and teach at a secondary level. Here are my questions:

1. How many years does this usually take? And whats the starting salary?

2. When you have this degree, do you have to have a certain area of concentration? (Such as concentration in psychology or sociology.)

3. After getting the degree, would I have to take additional education classes to teach?

4. Is it hard to find a job in this area?
 
You'll need a Bachelor's degree, which generally takes 4 years, full-time, then a teaching credential (I THINK a couple more years).

The best thing to do is go to websites of some colleges you're considering, and look at what they say about the requirements for a Secondary Teaching Credential for Social Studies. Each college has their own set of programs, each with it's own set of requirements and options.

(Also, once you're enrolled, you'll get an academic adviser to help you plan your studies.)

The starting salary will depend on the school that hires you.

Sorry, I dunno whether you need to pick one social science field for emphasis, or you do a more general thing. Go to college websites for that.

After getting the 4-year, yes, you have education classes, and then you do observations and supervised teaching to get the credential.

Sorry, dunno about the job market -- that is, what it will be when you're ready to look. Right now, governments are laying teachers off, due to our economic crisis. By the time you're ready, they may well be doing lots of hiring.

One thing you could do is look into Ameri-Corps, where you agree to teach in an underprivileged area for a given amount of time.
