Questions about office mobile and smart phone?

I used to have an SGH A777 phone, which is just a normal slider phone and I did not have a data plan, just unlimited texting. Then, my dad won a Pantech Matrix Pro for free and he gave it to me. This phone comes with Office mobile and I was wondering if I'd need a data plan to be able to use Microsoft word, powerpoint, excel, or onenote on my phone?
