Questions about my 2001 Ford Escort ZX2.?

Alright, I'm about to sell my 1998 Chevrolet Blazer and buy my step-moms 2001 Ford Escort ZX2, its all stock, I'm looking for some of the cheaper ways to "beef" it up a little, first should i go with a cold air intake or a short ram or just a K&N air filter, also should I buy an expensive muffler or will the advance auto ricer muffler do the same job or at least not enough for the price change? Also I'm wondering what the top speed is, i looked on youtube.com, and the highest anyone had theirs was to 106mph, is that the governor, the top end or them just pussing out? I know its not as fast but it is an automatic...=(
 
I like your K&N option best with the ricer muffler . It should breath well on both ends and not kill you price wise to badly . Good luck .
