Questions about indoor sprint triathlons?

I am thinking of entering an indoor sprint triathlon. I'm a road runner, but swim and bike for cross training. From what I've been ascertaining from these (it's a 10 minute swim, 15 bike then 15 minute treadmill run), is that winners are determined based on total mileage. In other words, the swim isn't weighted more heavily and the bike less, etc. Therefore, I would find it prudent to put most of my effort into the bike. I'm just fearing that if I kill myself in the swim (which I am a pretty good swimmer) to only come out 0.15 miles faster than the next gal, that I'll loose it in the bike (which is probably my weak point).

Furthermore, the biking is done on a spinner. I'm not that familiar with the workings of a spinner, but apparently, the distance will be calculated based on average revolutions per minute. Therefore, I would think that putting the resistance all the way on low would get you the most revolutions? (This is in contrast to working in a harder gear which might actually propel you further on the road).

Finally, I have a question regarding equipment. Since the bike is only 15 minutes, is it worth it to wear padded shorts? I can't imagine running in them! (transition is only 5 minutes).

What say you?
