As of late ive been buying loads of caspers comics from the 50s-60s and im really getting into this ghost! Has he ever had his own cartooon series, if so where could i obtain episodes?

Casper has had a few cartoon series (Thanks for making me feel old, btw ;)). The earliest one that comes to mind is Casper the Friendly Ghost and Company, a selection of re-packaged shorts from Paramount Pictures-retitled "Harveytoons", which premiered in 1974. It was syndicated.

Then there was Hanna-Barbera's Casper and the Angels (NBC, 1979-1980), which had Casper assinged to help a pair of lady cops in the year 2179, with the "help" of his ghost friend, a new character named Hairy Scary.

Then came the Saturday Morning series simply titled Casper (FOX, 1996-1997), which was based on the 1995 live action movie.

As for where you could obtain episodes, I assume that you mean legally, in any case, I don't know if that should be discussed here.

The mid 90's Casper animated series is available in a few single disc DVDs with I believe most of the first season. I forget how long the show lasted, but I believe it made to at least 52 episode (at least three seasons).

On top of the animated series, Casper's had at least four films. (One theatrical and three DTV).

'Casper Meets Wendy' featured a young Hilary Duff as good witch Wendy.

Holy crap. I know I just discovered it thanks to this post, but his Casper the Friendly Ghost song makes almost every other comic-book referencing song in my extensive collection sound like bullcrap. It is both awesome and sad. Listen to it here.

"nobody treated him nice while he was alive,
you can't buy no respect like the librarian said,
but everybody respects the dead,
they loved the friendly ghost."

His music isn't something I want to listen to all the time, but he sure as hell has an interesting story.

Check out his song, "Silly Love" if you really want the waterworks going.

Anyway, back on topic.

Yeah, my cousin has a collection of those, and they're really pretty good, generally speaking. Spooky's my fave, followed by Nightmare (who appeals to my girly horsey side, I suppose...:p)

im appreciating the responses here!

i have a few more questions, what were the first animated shorts to ever air of casper. the friendly ghost appears to be the very first, who made it and what series is it from?

Yep, the Friendly Ghost was the first short to feature Casper. It was a theatrical cartoon in the Noveltoons series, released to theaters in 1945 by Paramount.

Not listed above for TV shows was Casper's first appearances on TV--- in "Matty's Funday Funnies" (later "Matty's Funnies"), a compilation of Casper (and other Paramount stars like Herman and Katnip, Little Audrey, etc.) that aired on ABC on weekends in the late 50s/early 60s.

A few years later (after Beany and Cecil took over "Matty"), Casper got his first made-for-TV cartoons, "The New Casper Cartoon Show." This series took advantage of the additions the comics made by that point, by setting it in the comics' "Enchanted Forest" setting----thus, Casper could be among fellow supernatural creatures (elves, talking trees, fairy tale characters, etc.) and have other story possibilities than "say hi to some ordinary joe, sees them cartoonishly race off into the distance in fright" as seen in his theatrical shorts.

This matty's funday funnies you speak of, was this the firstshow that aired the famous studios noveltoons? also i keep seeing the word theatrical in regards to alot of these famous studios shorts, were they really released in theaters before tv?

Was matty's funday funnies the first show to air the noveltoons?

also when i read about alot of classic cartoons like the donald duck disney shorts and the early noveltoon casper shorts by famous studios i keep seeing '' theatrical release'', before the age of tv were these really show in theaters?

Um.... before television, animated shorts were seen in movie theaters, with the studios shutting down their theatrical shorts divisions in the 50s/60s and airing the shorts in half-hour packages on TV.

"Matty's (Funday) Funnies" was such a package, for the Harvey theatrical shorts, with the show hosted by a "Matty Mattel", a then-mascot for Mattel Toys. Far as I can guess, they were probably the first time Casper, etc aired on television in the US.

Thought everyone knew that animated shorts aired in movie theaters before television.... (shrug)
