questions about 89 kawasaki sx stand up starter bindex, is their an easier way?

I have a 89 kawi 650 sx standup jet ski, the bindex is shot and i have a new one, my question is, do I have to pull the flywheel to get the bindex out our is their an easier way. In order to pull the flywheel, i would need to remove the motor from the ski and that seems like a lot of work for a part that is said to go out a lot, can u help
