A: yes a car can run with faulty coil
B: May or may not depends on the extent of the damage
C: Highly unlikly, but possible there Computer (PCM) does get a TACH signal from coil, but i've never seen a coil take out a PCM in a focus before. Still possible i guess.
D: Yes, i would change wires and plugs if they never been done before. I also recommend you use motorcraft wires since they last longer. also use motorcraft or autolite plugs. if missfire is still there replace coil.

A) No the coil is basically a transformer if it's shorted then it's not going to do it's job
B) No if the computer was botched then it wouldn't even know how to run the motor as the fuel injectors and sensors are all controlled by the computer
C) Yes if there was a actual short then it could very easily fry your computer
D) Yes it very well could be

I would check plugs / wires i would also put some methel hydrate or gas line antifreeze in your tank and some fresh fuel .. as well as some injector cleaner as a fowled injector could be the issue as well

and lastly i would have your fuel pressure checked as the symtoms you described also sound like it could be a fuel pump starting to loose pressure

The reasons i pick plugs and wires is if 2 out of 4 are fowled your car will run but very horribly with little power or speed and would produce lots of white smoke from fuel not being burnt

the reason i pick fuel pump is because if your pump is not building enough pressure it can't feed your engine with enough fuel (if you rev it would bog down and stall)

the reason i pick injectors is because if there clogged it will have the same effect as bad plugs and wires

and the reason i say gas line antifreeze and new fuel is because sometimes when it's really hot out and then gets cold moisture is drawn into your tank and condenses and over time will build up if you add methel hydrate every few months or so it drys up your fuel :) as water is soluble in alchol and alchol will burn

On Monday morning, I started it and it sputtered roughly, but idled and did not stall. There was a lot of smoke from the exhaust. Restarting it a couple moe times did not solve the problem. It sputtered at no more than 10 mph all the way to the repair shop. I figured it was just spark plugs (and/or wires).

The mechanic later told me that I learned that the ignition coil shorted out the whole computer system and would need to be replaced as well.

I'm pretty sure this is all not just a coincidence but I have a few questions:

a. can the car drive/start with a faulty ignition coil?
b. would the car be functional with a shorted out computer?
c. can an ignition coil ruin a whole computer system?
d. is it possible for the issue to be just theplugs and wires?

thanks for any help anyone can provide.
